Shipyard Marine Inspector

REPORTS TO: Vice President of Chesapeake Shipbuilding

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: You will assist with all aspects of verifying that vessels are constructed in accordance with approved plans and compliant with the Code of Federal Regulations. You will directly supervise employees and contractors as directed by the Vice President. You will be responsible for ensuring the success of CSC through a commitment to safety and quality, while exceeding company and client expectations. You will be responsible to drive efficiencies in production and procurement to minimize costs and maximize profits. Duties will include scheduling, monitoring, and coordinating with various CSC trade departments and subcontractors to ensure inspection deadlines are met.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TASKS:

· Responsible for providing technical expertise and leadership in the enforcement of marine safety, vessel inspection, pollution prevention, vessel manning, regulations, treaties, and international conventions.

· Reviews vessels plans, safety management systems and operating systems to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards.

· Ensure inspection documentation is prepared and appropriate orders drafted specifying required changes or modifications to vessels and their equipment.

· Develop and implement a quality assurance system to ensure steel and aluminum vessels meet the applicable standards such as ABS Steel Vessel Rules. This includes, but is not limited to tank testing, inspecting plate fit-up and gouging, weld inspections of the hull envelope, internal structural members, protrusions, fittings, appendages, special tanks and special use structure.

· Inspecting and testing vessel machinery, including propulsion equipment, control machinery, auxiliary machinery, special deck, vessel pumping equipment, electrical, piping, and power general systems.

· Verify that installations are per approved drawings; steel fit-up; tank testing; welding examinations; pipe fit-up and testing; pipe fit-up and testing; mechanical system testing and verification; electrical system testing and verifications.

· Shipyard’s primary point of contact to coordinate U.S. Coast Guard, USPHS, and ABS inspections and surveys and ensure vessels under construction meet the requirements of the Code of Federal Regulations an U.S. Coast Guard commercial vessel standards.

· Must be familiar with manual and semi-automatic welding procedures and welder certification tests.

· Ability to read and understand welding symbols, welding procedures and specifications.

· Must be detail oriented, methodical, and able to maintain clear and accurate records.

· Must be able to communicate effectively with workers, management, outside inspection agencies and government inspectors.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

· Knowledge of the requirements of 46 CFR Subchapter K

· Experienced performing weld tests including soap and air, hydrostatic pressure testing tanks and dye penetrant

· Qualifications as a K-Boat and T-Boat inspector and experience overseeing new construction steel and aluminum passenger vessels.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Position requires a significant amount of physical activity and mobility. Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolds, and stairs, crawl through small accesses and enter tanks and confined spaces through hatches and manholes throughout much of a normal workday.

· Ability to work in heat, cold or inclement weather

· Ability to kneel, climb and bend around or under inventory or equipment

MENTAL REQUIREIMENTS:

Normal level of visual acuity needed. Must be able to understand and follow directions. Normal hearing level needed. Hand-eye coordination required.

HAZARDS: Weather, fumes, moving mechanical parts, equipment, and vibration.
