“Giving meaning to the lives of our children in the present while preparing them to become active citizens in a democratic society”
–Grace Lee Boggs
The Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School (FACTS) is a K-8 charter school located in the Chinatown area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. FACTS was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School. Much of FACTS’s success is due to our culture of teacher collaboration. FACTS teachers plan together, share successful practices, and support each other’s growth. In our recent survey of teachers, one teacher wrote, “FACTS is one of the kindest, most supportive schools I have ever worked at,” and according to another, “I have never worked with a more committed group of loving educators.”
MISSION: FACTS provides children with an exemplary education that utilizes traditional arts and cultures found within their own and neighboring communities as the catalyst for critical inquiry and community engagement. FACTS has high academic standards, is community-based, incorporates and respects the lives of students and their families, engages students in understanding their own cultures and communities, and engages students in understanding their role as active participants in working for a just society.
We are currently seeking a certified Chinese teacher for grades K-8. This position is available for the 2023-24 School Year.
MANDARIN PROGRAM AT FACTS
We teach Mandarin Chinese to all of our students for one period of instruction per week. We use a holistic approach to learning Mandarin, integrating cultural studies with language learning. We teach Mandarin so that our students become familiar with the language of Chinatown, the neighborhood in which we are situated, and to support heritage language learning for many of our students. Teaching Mandarin also helps promote a respect for diverse languages and an understanding for how language and culture work. In addition to teaching oral and written Mandarin, Chinese class might be spent teaching about Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year, exposing students to cultural practices such as Tai Chi or Chinese songs, or practicing calligraphy.
RESPONSIBILITIES
FACTS teachers challenge, inspire, and actively engage students in their own learning process by teaching both for content and for critical thinking and character development. Teachers work cooperatively with content area teachers, Special Education, English Language Development and other specialist teachers. The FACTS Specials teachers (Chinese, music, art, PE) form a team with our Folk Arts Education Specialist to work collaboratively with other staff members in the planning and implementation of all ritual calendar events and to support the integration of folk arts education in the school.
