The City of Auburn Public Works department is looking for a talented Maintenance Worker II to add to our team! This position requires skilled manual work and/or heavy equipment operation in the construction, maintenance and repair of City equipment, utilities and facilities. This involves a variety of tasks which may subject the employee to heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity.

Employees may prioritize, schedule, direct and review the work of full-time employees, seasonal and temporary employees, volunteers, and community service workers for work projects.

Primary Duties

  • Employees are expected to perform all of the duties of the Maintenance Worker II classification as assigned.
  • Prioritize, schedule, direct and review work of employees on specific projects as assigned.
  • Operate and/or drive various equipment and machinery including but not limited to: loaders, backhoes, tractor mowers used to cut street rights-of-way, street sweeper, and those items identified in the Maintenance Worker I job description.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor mechanical repairs on such equipment.
  • Maintenance Worker II - CDL workers shall be responsible for operation of the; boom truck; and/or a combination of a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds, a trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross weight rating of the combined vehicle(s) is more than 26,000 pounds, any size vehicle which carries placarding amounts of hazardous materials.
  • Tree maintenance and/ or tree removal of various size trees, with operation of a 40ft bucket truck, chainsaws, pole saws and woodchipper
  • During growing season, you will be responsible for directing and holding accountable MWI’s and seasonals on clearing of all vegetation within City Storm Ponds.
  • Storm pond maintenance which requires operation of Ventrac slope mower, line trimmers, hedgers, chainsaws and other small tools
  • Operation of sidearm tractor mowers used for maintaining roadside vegetation
  • Operation of a Street Sweeper
  • Walking on slopes or uneven terrain
  • Stump grinding/ stump removal with the use of mini excavator and/or stump grinder
  • Removal of noxious weeds
  • Working within tall grasses and weeds
  • Responsible for wearing personal protective equipment and being aware of your surroundings and the traffic near where you are working
  • Plant trees and shrubs; seed lawns; prune trees and shrubs; perform various landscaping work; rake and blow leaves
  • Assist in ordering materials and equipment for the division.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment including mowing equipment and attachments, backpack blowers and other small equipment; changing oil and belts; troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment failure; sharpening, grinding and mower blades,
  • Perform skilled work in, mechanical, general maintenance and construction work.
  • Monitor job safety; train other employees in safety techniques and safe use and care of tools and equipment.
  • Compile and maintain permanent division records.
  • Maintain accurate records of time and materials used in work.
  • Interact courteously with other employees, utility customers, vendors, and the public
  • Correctly and safely operate all equipment and tools used in assigned division.
  • Safely mix and/or apply pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals to grounds and landscape.
  • Set up and remove barricades, traffic cones or similar objects.
  • Maintain proficiency and expertise in specific skills necessary for performing work.
  • May perform the work of the Maintenance Worker I classification.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance
  • Due to internal and external customer service needs, incumbent must be able to work a full-time schedule, on-site (appropriate City work sites).
  • Works effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
  • Completes work and projects in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Understands and follows directions from supervisor, posted work rules and procedures.
  • Works courteously and effectively with public officials, citizens, contractors, vendors, developers, supervisor, and other employees, both in person and over the telephone; assisting them with a wide variety of information pertaining to City and department.
  • Show initiative in performing job functions.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have:

High school diploma*, or equivalent

  • AND*
  • three years of full-time paid related work experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment.

Must have or obtain a Class "A" CDL and tanker endorsement within twelve months* as a condition of employment which is *paid by the City.

If necessary for assigned work, an employee will be required to obtain and maintain a Public Pesticide Operator's license, Distribution Specialist Certificate of Competency from State of Washington D.O.H., First Aid Certification, Flagging Certification, Forklift Certification, Playground Safety Certification, Backflow Device Testing Certification, Ball field Safety Certificate and/or Defensive Driving Certification, or other required certification or license.
