Performs general labor work in the inspection, maintenance and repair of hydrants within the fire hydrant systems. Work involves the testing and inspection of installed fire hydrants for code compliance; Performs fire flow testing of fire hydrants, records hydraulic data, and paints hydrants with the prescribed color code standards. Other labor work may be assigned to assist in building and grounds maintenance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work is performed in accordance with standard operating procedures under the direction of the Assistant Public Works Director. Work is reviewed through performance reviews and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements

Education and experience:
  • Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Past experience showing mechanical experience in maintaining and repairing equipment, preferably with fire hydrant and/or water distribution systems.
  • Some experience logging and recording information, preferably utilizing automated devices and systems.
  • Any combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.
Special requirements:
  • Valid Arizona State operator's license or ability to obtain one within 6 (six) months.

Essential Functions

  • Performs installations, preventive maintenance, repairs, refurbishes, and removes fire hydrants in the water system.
  • Performs hydraulic testing on fire hydrants to establish fire flow capabilities and to locate fire flow deficiencies; Paints fire hydrants in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Maintains written and computerized records of work performed and materials used.
  • Participates in the annual inspection and testing cycle to assist in ensuring department hydrant system goals are achieved.
  • Prepares maps locating fire hydrants in the water system.
  • Coordinates work assignments with other departments and agencies.
  • Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work; Operates trucks and other vehicles during the course of repair and maintenance work.
  • Properly sets-up traffic control including safety devices, signs, and barricades to provide a safe working environment when working in traffic areas and to notify public of work in process.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures; follows safety policies and practices, works in a safe manner, and reports unsafe activity and conditions.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
  • Participates in assigned meetings relating to the fire hydrant system.
  • May serve on a variety of employee committees.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Miscellaneous

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the inspection, installation, servicing and repair of fire hydrants to include procedures for diagnosing malfunctions.

  • General principles of water system hydraulics in order to conduct pressure and flow tests; Materials and use of tools and equipment used in valve and hydrant maintenance and repair work.
  • Basic knowledge of principles and practices of automated data entry, recordkeeping and reporting. Addresses and street locations of the City of Kingman and surrounding areas.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices including safe driving principles and practices.
  • Utilizing computer hardware and software to accomplish work assignments (i.e., Microsoft Office) and demonstrate proficiency to perform data entry and update department database.;
  • Work independently to effectively perform work assignments.
  • Observe and adhere to proper safety precautions and safely and effectively perform job tasks.
  • Establish effective, cooperative working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.
  • Maintain production schedules and carry out assigned projects to their completion.
  • Meet physical requirements to include performing physical work, in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
