Shape the language for a new economy
Join Glo as our Lead Writer
We're looking for a word-loving writer to join our early team and take the lead on writing and language.
We need amazing language. Inclusive, helpful, clear, light on jargon, and as simple as possible. That's where you come in.
Why we need amazing language
We have to earn the trust of an insanely diverse array of audiences.
First and foremost, the mainstream. As we'll need massive adoption, accessibility is key. We can't afford for Glo to be “just a crypto community thing”.
Secondly, enthusiasts. We want to spark a movement of individuals and businesses that believe in our cause and opt to use, build on, and promote Glo. This requires honest, consistent, and inspiring communication.
Beyond that, we'll interface with philanthropists, fintech companies, the human rights and sustainable development community, governments, academia, crypto enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, journalists.
Our subject matters are complicated and delicate—economically, technically, ethically and politically. The incumbent language tends to be riddled with jargon. The way we talk should both be understood by non-experts and respected by experts.
Being deliberate with our words and empathetic with our audiences is paramount.
The role
You'll join us as one of the first employees. We're only just getting started, so this is an open-ended role.
Still, some things to expect:
- Generalist writing role. Take the lead on making our language simple, human, clear, and helpful wherever our words end up. Whether that's educational content, press releases, UX copy, community communication or social media.
- Lots of autonomy. As our journey unfolds, identify where good language can bring the most value and make it happen. Either by writing things yourself, helping your colleagues write better, naming new concepts, reviewing, consulting, outsourcing to freelancers, etc. And, as our organization scales, grow the writing team.
- Shape how we talk about things. Become an expert on our subject matter, mission and philosophy. Help us find the right names for new concepts, and develop our vocabulary and tone of voice as we're figuring out who our main audiences are.
- Create exceptional educational content that leaves the reader feeling knowledgeable, excited, or whatever the goal is. Break down big hairy questions. Think carefully when to introduce jargon and when to avoid it.
- Make words shine across the organization. Help our community manager communicate more effectively. Craft landing pages that draw viewers into a movement they didn't even know existed. Rewrite our legal docs and employment contracts to be more human. Ghostwrite a series of tweets that finally explain that difficult concept everyone keeps tripping over.
- Create a culture of care for language. Take others with you in your slipstream and level up writing within the organization at large through training, coaching, and documentation. You can't write all of the words, after all.
Who we're looking for
First and foremost: a bright minded wordsmith who's great at untangling complicated things. You love to dive deep into a complex subject, make sense of it, then craft the words that help other people make sense of it too.
English is your native language, or you command it at that level.
You don't just write – you solve problems with words. You emphasize with your reader and care about their situation, feelings and goals. You pick your words depending on the context, aware of where they'll end up and what you're trying to achieve.
You're at home in tech/digital. You understand how words live in a context of app screens, news feeds, platforms, online communities and search engines.
You're able to articulate why the things you write work well, so the people you work with can learn from you. You're no bureaucrat, but whenever it makes sense you'll confidently document/standardize, or train/coach others.
You have a relentless drive to make things simple, clear and helpful, tirelessly advocating for what's best for the reader/customer/user.
You're a self-starter. You can work with a brief, sure – but you're also constantly looking where good language can add value to what we're doing, and feel comfortable taking the lead.
If you like Monzo's tone of voice guide as much as we do, we're probably on the same page about what helpful language is ✌
