The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce a competitive opportunity to serve as a part-time Human Resources Assistant in our Human Resources Division!

The selected candidate will provide exceptional administrative and customer service support in a fast-paced environment while managing the reception area for the office. Candidates should have a keen eye for details and have the ability to communicate effectively while support customers, to include interaction with some of the highest levels of agency leadership.

Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Administrative Support – Compose, prepare, revise and finalize correspondence, reports, memoranda and other written documents. Track and organize appointments, calendars, files, conference calls, conferences, and other events. Establish and maintain files and track data as necessary. Prepare reports and letters; develop statistical reports ensuring accuracy and conformity of data. Answer phones, receive, retrieve, distribute and administer mail and distribute documents accordingly. Responsible for providing receptionist support in conjunction with additional HR Assistant.


  • Recognition Program Coordinator – Provide program support with stakeholders for recognition activities for employees and teams.

  • Personnel Files Maintenance – Create personnel files for all new, active and transferring employees. Audit personnel files and remove separated files from active files. Request, transfer and create all personnel files within allotted time frame and insure all files are filed properly maintained.

The position is a part-time hourly position limited to an average of 29 work hours per week, not to
exceed 1500 work hours in the wage fiscal year ending April 30th of each annual year. The position is not eligible for the Commonwealth of Virginia Benefits.

  • Ability to effectively and efficiently implement and assist with the Human resources programs and functions.
  • Skill in operating office equipment and a variety of Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels of employees within VDOT.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to consistently interpret and apply policy and procedures.

  • Degree in Business or Human Resources Administration; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree.

Special Requirements
This position requires a fingerprint based Criminal History Background Check, DMV Record Check and Work History Verification with references.

VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

Salary negotiations cannot exceed the posted salary range.

Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth telework policy.
