Pay Range
$103,290 - $139,128 Annually for the SES.1 level
$123,960 - $166,992 Annually for the SES.2 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Mechanical Engineer to support the High Explosives Applications Facility (HEAF). You will work with the Lead Mechanical Engineer to plan, manage, and execute projects in support of facility and programmatic work in HEAF, including firing tanks, laboratory areas, and the facility structure itself. This position is in the Facility Operations and Support (FOS) organization within Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
You will
- Work with Lead Mechanical Engineer to develop designs, project scope, costs, schedule, and risk plans to field and execute projects focused on facility maintenance, operations, and programmatic equipment for use in a high explosives facility.
- Draft drawings and operating procedures.
- Support facility capabilities including but not limited to laboratory guns, firing tanks, and associated sub-systems.
- Review the mechanical design of new facility equipment and mechanical design changes for existing facility and plant equipment.
- Promote and support plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level
- Review, write, and develop technical specifications, drawings, and operating procedures.
- Oversee and provide technical direction to facility capabilities including but not limited to laboratory guns, firing tanks, and associated sub-systems.
- Work closely with scientific personnel and experimentalists to plan and safely conduct experiments by assessing shrapnel, fragment, and shock mitigation techniques and technologies to ensure facility and personnel protection.
- Ensure that new or modified mechanical facilities are installed and operating and ensure that all mechanical equipment, including Systems with Safety Functions, are properly maintained.
- Participate in formal and informal design reviews.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Fundamental understanding of hardware design, fabrication, installation, and commission.
- Experience effectively completing projects with well-defined scope.
- Demonstrated ability to devise solutions for technical requirements of limited complexity.
- Intermediate knowledge of computer operating systems and related software applications, such as: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Familiarity with the Design Review Process.
- Demonstrated experience supporting plans that promote and value diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.
Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level
- Practical knowledge of mechanical design and analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to devise solutions for technical requirements of moderate complexity.
- Comprehensive knowledge of hardware design, fabrication, installation, and commission.
- Experience in project scope definition, design, and execution and the ability to manage (organize, direct, and monitor schedule and budgets) multiple projects concurrently.
- Demonstrated independent judgement and the ability to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests.
- Advanced knowledge of computer operating systems and related software applications, such as: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Qualifications We Desire
- Previous hands-on experience with mechanical systems
- Experience with writing or reviewing procedures with an emphasis on personnel safety.
- Experience working in the nuclear weapons program and with Laboratory operations and business processes.
- Basic understanding of theory and application of explosives and the characteristics of explosive reactions.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
