JOB SUMMARY
This position provides advice to the president and cabinet of the university to aid in the administration thereof.
MAJOR DUTIES
Provides legal advice to cabinet members on a wide range of legal issues within their departments.
Confers with cabinet members on matters involving legal interpretation and decisions related to university activities and policy questions.
Reviews contracts as to form, legality, improvement themes, and makes recommendations to sign to the president or his/her designee.
Researches legal issues and statutory case law; drafts and reviews opinions, resolutions, contracts, leases and other legal documents and instruments.
Collaborates with the Regional University System of Oklahoma General Counsel.
Collaborates with the Oklahoma Office of Attorney General and represents the university in civil litigation and administrative hearings held by local, state and federal agencies; performs pretrial, trial and appellate work.
Ensures compliance with state and federal rules and regulations.
Provides training to university personnel on legal issues and risk avoidance.
Audits existing university policies and procedures for compliance with laws, regulations, and policies enacted by federal and state government entities.
Conducts ethics investigations when assigned.
Serves on university committees as a designee of the president.
Provides confidential guidance on matters of employment law when requested by cabinet members.
Monitors and prepares comments on proposed federal and state legislation and regulations.
Prepares written correspondence as requested by the president.
Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of state and federal law.
Knowledge of legal research and writing.
Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.
Skill in decision making and problem solving.
Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
Skill in oral and written communication.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include federal and state law, university policies and procedures, and Regional University System of Oklahoma policies. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table.
The work is typically performed in an office.
The work may involve some travel including occasional overnight stays.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an ABA accredited school of law.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Oklahoma for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Current membership in the State Bar of Oklahoma or becoming a member of the State Bar of Oklahoma within six months of being hired.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience in higher education.
Current membership in the State Bar of Oklahoma.
Salary: $61,800.00
