The Opportunity:
We are looking for a Forestry Operations Technician to be based near our Keysville, VA, or Dillwyn, VA, location with the ability to travel to Covington and West Point, VA. There will be a fairly significant amount of same day travel as well as a couple of overnights each month as this person will be responsible for supporting our Forest Resources Covington and Eastern Virginia/North Carolina Regions, that support our mills in Covington, VA, Hopewell, VA, West Pt, VA, and Roanoke Rapids, NC. This position provides overall operational support to align to the Regions’ objectives to maintain the lowest cost, highest quality fiber sourcing in support of the mills’ forecasted needs while maintaining the highest compliance with safety and environmental requirements. The role is responsible for supporting multiple facilities and activities in achieving production goals, making and supporting sound operational decisions, and troubleshooting mill customer challenges. The position is focused on achieving WestRock Path to One goals across multiple facilities for long-term success.

Job Objectives and Roles include:
1. Model WestRock’s safety conscious culture.
2. Execute and support environmental compliance and activities for assigned facilities.
3. Support and execute wood and recycled fiber scaling activities at facilities, as assigned.
4. Perform fiber quality and safety audits as assigned.
5. Support wood handling operations at specific facilities, on an as-needed basis.
6. Develop forestry skills necessary to support specific forestry activities, e.g. boundary marking, timber sale inspections, and timber cruising.

7. Support sustainability and certification goals through landowner and supplier contacts.

8. Through training, develop skills needed to measure and validate fiber inventories, including the use of drones and associated software.

What You Need to Succeed:
Three plus (3+) years of operational experience is preferred, specifically related to teams that purchase, handle, haul, and process fiber. Ability to leverage and/or adopt to technology, such as data recorders and MicroSoft Office tools is important in this role. Associates degree is a plus but not required.
