Function

Apply your mechanical aptitude to ensuring that fire suppression and rescue equipment is well-maintained and ready for use in an emergency!

Summary

This is a high level technical and skilled position responsible for performing work related to the logistical needs and support of the Charlotte Fire Department. This position also serves as the back-up to Logistics Storekeepers. This position requires considerable independent work and decision making with limited supervision.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs repairs and scheduled maintenance on a variety of firefighting and rescue equipment. Examples include, but are not limited to, self-contained breathing apparatus, dive equipment, hydraulic rescue tools, ventilation fans and saws, rescue saws, fire hose, ground ladders and firefighter protective clothing.
  • Develops preventative maintenance schedules for firefighting and rescue equipment.
  • Serves in the on-call rotation for after-hours repairs and deliveries.
  • Responds to emergency incidents to support operating companies with equipment repairs and replenishing of depleted supplies.
  • Makes scheduled and unscheduled deliveries of supplies and equipment to fire stations.
  • Provides assistance to the Fleet Manager with moving fire vehicles between maintenance shops and other locations and placing new trucks and equipment into service.
  • Performs routine inspections and cleaning of protective clothing.
  • Performs annual SCBA mask fit testing and air pack maintenance.

The Fire Equipment Technician primary responsibilities will relate to repair, maintenance and inventory of small engine equipment and tools, including chain saws, ventilation equipment, rescue tools and lawn equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.

Sensory Requirements:

Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, and tabulating data.

  • Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and/or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.
  • Comprehensive written information in work-related documents.
  • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions, moderate exposure to environmental conditions and frequent exposure to computer screens, files, and phone.

Special Requirements

  • When on-call, must be able to respond in person within 45 minutes
  • Must be able to obtain SCOTT Air Pack Maintenance, Small Engine Repair, and NFPA 1851 Care and Maintenance certifications within 6 months of job entry date from a community college or equipment manufacturer. The department will cover the cost of training and testing.

Preferred Qualification

Three (3) plus years of relevant related work experience with education and experience to perform the essential job functions.

Minimum Qualifications

HS diploma or GED and 3+ years of relevant work experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to perform the essential job functions.

  • Verifiable experience in the maintenance and repair of small engine equipment, hydraulic rescue tools, and self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Considerable knowledge of fire department equipment.
  • Basic PC literacy for inventory control and purchasing.

Salary offer will be based on selected applicant skills, qualifications and experience.
