Sheboygan County Head Start
Title: Family Advocate
Full Time/Part year
$2,000 Sign on bonus
Monthly incentive
Reports to: Family Development
Responsibilities: Provides direct services to Head Start families to ensure that each family’s educational, nutrition, health, mental health, and social service needs are being met. Works closely with families to assist them in developing family goals and action plans to achieve those goals. Creatively guides families to reach their full potential.
Duties:
1. Conducts family visits on a monthly/bi-monthly basis with each Head Start family. Family visits should be completed in the home whenever possible.
2. Assists families in completing the Family Partnership Agreement.

Goals Follow-Up - subsequent home visits and contacts
3. Follow-up on the family’s progress with their goals, as well as other issues expressed by the family.
4. Makes referrals to appropriate Managers/Area Specialists and/or agencies of concerns expressed by the family, such as (but not limited to): Insurance/Managed
Care, WIC/Food Stamps, legal assistance, child support, special needs/mental health concerns, educational concerns, and health concerns.
5. Provides general parent education to families. Issues could include, but are not limited to: family issues, discipline, health related issues, educational opportunities, job training/skills building, domestic abuse, child abuse/neglect.
6. Provides outreach and advocacy for families with needs or concerns such as getting to required doctor/dentist appointments.
7. Completes and submits tracking forms to Family Development in a timely manner.
8. Maintains case files on work done with the families, including documentation of family and professional contacts.
9. Documentation in Child Plus must be done weekly.
10. Participates in child recruitment efforts.
11. Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops as requested or required.
12. Works closely with the Health/Nutrition Manager and families to obtain children’s health records. This could include helping families to schedule and keep physical and dental appointments.

13. Assists parents to plan family activities at the site(s) assigned. Also attends the
Family Activities planned.
14. Encourages and assists parents to participate in all aspects of the program as described in the Head Start Performance Standards.
15. Comply with Wisconsin Statutes Children’s Code and Head Start Personnel
Policies in suspected cases of child abuse & neglect and records in bound medical log and file.
16. Performs any other related duties as assigned.
17. Assists in the classroom as needed; ongoing communication with teaching staff.
18. Provides child care for council and parent meetings.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
2. Must be able to demonstrate through education and/or experience: the ability to work effectively with community resources, communicate with other staff working with the same families, conduct interviews with clients which assess needs and define goals, and set priorities for service delivery.
3. Must have a positive attitude and ability to work with a team.
4. Must have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, including liability, and an automobile for occasional use on the job.
5. Speaking and writing skills that enable effective communication.
6. Commitment to providing opportunities for low-income families to be self- sufficient and to the principles and mission of Head Start.
7. Must be able to work with adults, children, and people with varied backgrounds and beliefs.
8. Must be able to keep accurate records, file monthly reports, and make all necessary documentation in a timely manner.
9. Must be in good health and obtain a physical examination as required.
10. Must have Mantoux tuberculin testing upon hire.
11. Must be able to occasionally work irregular hours.

3. Frequent driving for home visits sometimes in outlying areas.
4. Regular kneeling, bending and sitting on the floor to attend to child's needs.
5. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
6. Must be able to work independently without intensive supervision.
7. Must be able to balance and prioritize work load and have strong time management skills.
