POSITION SUMMARY:
Assist students to develop the skills and confidence that lead to self expression in the visual arts and an appreciation of the arts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assess visual arts ability, skills and knowledge in order to design appropriate instruction and make appropriate referrals.
  • Provide appropriate instruction for all students.
  • Establish a safe and comfortable environment for students, including reasonable guidelines and appropriate consequences for behavior.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the elementary art course of study, and implement it using a variety of instructional methods and materials.
  • Prepare clear and timely lesson plans that demonstrate knowledge of the course of study and contain sound teaching methods.
  • Provide cross-curricular activities whenever possible.
  • Schedule instructional time according to district and building guidelines.
  • Make effective use of resources and materials, and care for them in a responsible manner. Keep an inventory, and order supplies and equipment.
  • Develop displays/shows of student work, in cooperation with the staff.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records, according to district and building rules; for example, attendance and grades.
  • Prepare adequately for substitute teachers.
  • Serve as a member of the educational team by assisting with assessments for special programs and making referrals for special services as needed.
  • Observe the adopted daily building schedule, including starting and ending times for teachers and students, and perform all assigned duties.
  • Attend all assigned teachers' meetings, unless excused.
  • Serve on committees and participate in school activities in a professionally responsible manner.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers, administrators and support staff.
  • Engage in continuous professional growth, including attending training sessions as assigned. Complete a professional development plan according to procedures adopted by the school district.
  • Use sound judgment, tact and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
  • Serve as a role model in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide teachers with information about how to complete art projects in their classrooms.
  • Provide products for school activities; for example, props for plays, logos, posters, murals, displays.
  • Work with student teachers if needed.
  • Maintain an appropriate personal appearance.
  • Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal(s).
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in art education from an accredited college or university.
  • Appropriate Ohio teaching certificate/license.
  • Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of a variety of instructional methods.
  • Ability to teach basic skills using a variety of media.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in many different situations, including teams of teachers.
  • Knowledge of child development and age appropriate activities.
  • Ability to modify activities for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials and ability to deal with them appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Well developed organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Basic knowledge of computer technology, or willingness to acquire and appropriately apply such knowledge.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
  • Various office machines; for example, computers, calculators, copiers and laminating machines.
  • Various educational and art specialty equipment; for example, kiln, opaque projector, overhead projector, slide projector, paper cutters, and cameras.
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
  • Some exposure to hazardous materials and potential allergens, such as markers, glue, clay, paint and paper mache.
  • Possible exposure to the misuse by children of materials such as scissors, rulers, paint brushes and tacks.
  • Possible interaction with unruly children.
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather; that is, being prepared to come to school on all scheduled days, except calamity days
  • Must be available for education related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read reach with hands and arms.
  • Regular requirement to lift, carry, push and pull various items; for example, equipment and supplies, up to a maximum of 25 lbs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Length of Employment: One Year Limited Contract
  • Salary and Fringe Benefits: Based on Current Negotiated Salary and Benefit Schedule.
