Position Summary:


The primary responsibilities are to develop in each student an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each student to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of students in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports. The teacher collaborates with staff to co-plan, co-deliver, and individualize instruction for all students in a class; work together creatively to accommodate special needs, diversity and educational backgrounds of the students; and overcome instructional challenges constructively. The teacher is a hardworking, goal-oriented and enthusiastic professional with excellent subject knowledge and a sound understanding of the Missouri Learning Standards and Common Core State Standards.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms, and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing a course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  • Analyze, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student, to the extent feasible.
  • Provide appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
  • Maintain control of storage and use of the school-owned property.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  • Evaluate each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Select and order uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  • Communicates with parents, coaches, and student progress.
  • Identify student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Implement instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
  • Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.
  • Establish weekly objectives and Units of Study that cover the Missouri Learning Standards and Common Core State Standards.
  • Facilitate activities and projects that incorporate communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
  • Use discipline models of BIST and Love & Logic to maintain a positive, encouraging a learning environment.
  • Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis.
  • Assist in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement.
  • Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community.
  • Assume responsibility for meeting his/her course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Demonstrate gains in student performance.
  • Participate in meetings, training, and professional development
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating, etc.
  • Act in a professional and ethical manner at all times and comply with school policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Education
  • Valid Missouri teaching certificate in the area of Physical Education
  • Desire to continue professional development
  • Excellent organization skills and an ability to coordinate multiple tasks and activities
  • Demonstrated success in urban education
