Position Description


  • Calculates settings for transmission and generation protective relays. Reviews operation requests from other units for its impact on protective schemes. Develops test plans and works with test crew to ensure relays are tested thoroughly and accurately. Analyzes fault recorder and other various data from substations to verify relay operations, calculate fault locations, and verify the proper operation of circuit breakers, transformers, and other substation and generating plant equipment. Works with field crews with work on relays, fault recorders, remote terminal units, or carrier equipment.

  • Essential Job Tasks:
  • Performs major types of relay setting calculations (manually and via computer, Transmission, Generation, and Industrial/Distribution), and fault and coordination studies with assistance from others.
  • Investigates power system events and protective relay operations, with assistance from other engineers.
  • Assists with reports of incorrect relay operations.
  • Performs contingency fault studies and recommends relay settings changes when system devices are removed for maintenance.
  • Ensures correct modeling of the Santee Cooper power system in CAPE through analysis of both existing networks and system changes.
  • Understands impedance data and can recognize issues.
  • Calculates fault locations for faults on the Santee Cooper system.
  • On call to help provide this assistance.
  • Participates in the documentation of NERC compliance for all standards where SPC - Studies and Applications has responsibility.
  • Assists in response to external customer's inquiries concerning power system issues or concerns.
  • Assists test crew with developing and deploying test plans, with assistance as needed from more experienced personnel.
  • Assists other internal groups: Generation, Distribution, Substation Maintenance, SPC - Const. and Maintenance etc. to assist in the diagnosis of problems and analyze equipment failures through the use of data from relays, fault recorders, and other recording equipment which is the responsibility of SPC - Studies and Applications.
  • Maintains fault recorders, sequence of event recorders, and SPC communication system equipment for the purposes of retrieving data from substations.

  • Engineer I
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited College/ University.
  • FE preferred.

  • Compensation Information:
    $67,800 - $84,740 (min. - mid.)

    Engineer II
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited College/ University + 2 years experience.
  • FE preferred.

  • Compensation Information:
    $75,600 - $94,490 (min. - mid.)

    Engineer III
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited College/ University + 5 years experience.
  • FE required.

  • Compensation Information:
    $84,280 - $105,350 (min. - mid.)

    Senior Engineer
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited College/ University + 8 experience.
  • PE required.

  • Compensation Information:
    $93,960 - $117,450 (min. - mid.)
