Position Overview:
Founded in 1971, Centers for New Horizons, Inc. (Centers) is a nonprofit organization that assists children, youth, and families to become self-reliant. With 200+ full-time staff, most of whom live in or near its service communities, Centers provides programs in seven locations throughout the Bronzeville and Riverdale communities of Chicago's Southside that reach over 1,000 individuals daily.

Position Summary:
Oversees and monitors the teacher’s lesson planning, organization, and implementation of education services for children at Bronzeville Early Care centers. These services contribute to the increased social competence in children and the enhancement and recognition of parents as the primary educators of their children. Manage and coordinate disabilities services in the program under the direction of the Education and Disability Manager. Manage all referrals for children with disabilities. Assists in setting, clarifying and communicating disabilities service standards and laws to staff and parents, when required or requested. Assisting Site Directors with tasks relate to educational endeavors within the center.

Scope of Responsibilities:
  • Perform the functions of this position with a strong understanding of the Head Start Performance Standards and component plans; Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework; and thorough knowledge and application of the developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Conduct classroom observations on a monthly basis, providing feedback to Staff regarding their work with children.
  • Develop collaborative agreements with the Chicago City College for the purpose of on site student training.
  • Provide training to parents to serve as teacher substitute for the program.
  • Conduct training and workshops for program staff and parent volunteers.
  • Participate in interviewing prospective candidates for vacant education and staff positions.
  • Review classroom lesson plans and education records monthly. Document all site visits including, record review, classroom observations, technical assistance, workshop presentation, and individual meetings.
  • Work closely with all education staff as a team member and contribute knowledge and expertise to the overall functioning of the team.
  • Participate in team meetings, staff meeting seminars, training, and committees related to program policies and practices.
  • Meets with other divisions to coordinate and implement educational training and objectives.
  • Coordinates efforts to achieve NAEYC accreditation status throughout the program. Provide career development counseling to staff and encourage in-service training, etc., to increase productivity and career advancement.
  • Assist in the Plans, formulates, coordinates and implements the Early Childhood Education plan.
  • Assist in the monitoring and implementation of the Department of Human Services (DHS), National Association for the Education of Young Children Services (NAEYC), and the Council of Accreditation(COA).
  • Training and Skills:
  • Demonstrated conceptual command of marketing, market research, early childhood programming, after school programming, facilities development and management, public policy formation, and finance issues as related to this position.
  • Ability to analyze data and generate accurate reports
  • Be a self-starter who must be able to organize information, time and plan work day.
  • Remain calm and positive in sometime pressure/stress filled conditions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to get along with diverse personalities, tactful, mature, and flexible.
  • Excellent organizational skills, demonstrates ability to pan, to manage projects, to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously to meet deadlines.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Works primarily independently with minimal supervision; but incorporates Umoja – teamwork when working in teams.
Qualifications:
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in early childhood program management, school age program management, public policy, planning, community economic development, social work, or a related field, or significant management or senior level staff experience in any one or more of these fields.
