DSHS WSH Safety and Intervention Trainer (Institution Counselor 3)
Western State Hospital is seeking a full-time Safety and Intervention Trainer to effectively educate and model best practices for all hospital staff.
In this role, you will educate employees enrolled in General New Employee Orientation, Clinical New Employee Orientation, Annual In-Service, or other scheduled trainings, as well as conduct ongoing and refresher training for all hospital employees as needed and directed. The work schedule is 10:00 p.m. - 8:30 a.m., Monday - Thursday. Evening and Night shifts include a shift differential in addition to the standard compensation rate.
Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.
Some of what you'll do:
Plan and deliver quality education courses as indicated by the respective certification, instructor guidelines, curriculum or training of trainer.- Instruct and facilitate courses utilizing adult learning principles to engage, motivate, and enhance staff learning and comprehension.
- Conduct check-ins on NEO graduates to identify training needs, training trends, and offer opportunities to provide additional training.
- As an educator and role model; demonstrate value based leadership for staff to engage, motivate, and support an optimal learning experience.
- Receive and review written and oral feedback to collaborate and continuously provide improvement to course materials, content, and training delivery.
- Provide technical assistance and specialized training consultation to program participants, employees, and internal/external stakeholders.
- Design and update lesson plans, student handbooks, assessments, handouts, trainer guides, and other necessary materials for instructor-led and online training.
- Maintain classrooms and student areas, including stocking supplies, providing amenities, stocking PPE, arranging furniture, and providing sanitization.
- Communicate and collaborate as a team member of Organizational Development and across disciplines to ensure a united approach to the delivery and standards of quality education positively impact staff and patients.
- Maintain current knowledge and understanding of safety and security standards, policy, procedures, education/training, background check procedures and supporting personnel.

- Ability to conduct training courses and presentations with fidelity in a variety of settings for diverse audiences.
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to facilitate groups; secure and maintain employee participant interest and cooperation; speak in public and write clearly and effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, employees, department partners, supervisory staff, and line staff; working collaboratively across disciplines and establishing professional relationships.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize work, and meet multiple conflicting deadlines
Who should apply?
- Professionals with a bachelor's degree preferably involving major study in psychology, sociology, or other social science.
- Five years of professional counseling or casework experience working with clients in a psychiatric or mental health setting. Graduate training in behavioral social sciences may be substituted year for year for the experience.
- One year as an Institution Counselor 2
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current CPR Certification.
- Current certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).
- Advanced training in Instructor Development and/or Curriculum Design.
- Two years of professional experience providing training, education, or coaching.
