Position Summary

The University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) is seeking a Director of Strategic Planning and Management to join their team. This position provides high level business planning and project management and analytical support for key strategic priorities. The Director assists with developing, communicating, executing, and sustaining cohesive strategic plans and initiatives. The Director is responsible for assisting in formalizing the Hospital's strategic planning processes and translating it for stakeholders across functions and business units. The Director assists in driving organizational change and forging new working relationships and synergies across the organization to enhance transparency and accountability for stakeholders' achievement of the Hospital's strategic priorities. This position works closely with Hospital and Clinic leadership to manage the analysis, design, development, and implementation of diverse enterprise-wide projects and initiatives as guided by strategic priorities. The Director will coordinate and collaborate with the COM the OVCHA and other relevant entities.

Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the translation of strategy into defined tactics, programs/projects, priorities, and timelines, and ensures alignment and attainment of the Hospital’s strategic plans to turn strategy into initiatives
  • Evaluates market signals and trends, and assesses opportunities to guide strategic direction and end-to-end business performance
  • Provides leadership in external market analysis (market share reporting, market projections and trends), financial analysis, and internal analysis, and works collaboratively with Hospital leadership to synthesize these assessments as related to strategic activities and plan development
  • Measures and projects business demand, growth opportunities, evaluate capacity and market trends, create financial models, and formulate operational plans
  • Provides comprehensive business planning support to analyze feasibility and desirability of potential health system projects to include new program initiatives, process re-designs, and operational reorganization efforts, and provide management support in the planning, development, and implementation of those initiatives.
  • Provides project management and oversight for key strategic initiatives as directed by the ACEO for Strategic Integration & Partnerships
  • Creates and develops an organizational dashboard to track accomplishment of strategic goals and objectives. May include definition development and implementation of metrics to report and monitor progress and ensure plans supports strategy milestones and deliverables
  • Establishes procedures for evaluating performance of different initiatives against expected costs and benefits
  • Integrates disciplined governance and decision-making best practices, including instituting processes, establishing clear expectations for stakeholders and senior leaders to drive transparency of decisions.
  • Facilitates meetings with service line leadership, Hospital leadership and operational leaders to plan large-scale capital projects, review cost, revenue, and service line performance, including trending and opportunities for improvement
  • Supports MOU development by providing necessary data and expertise
  • Provides planning consultation, facilitation, and collaboration to ensure alignment between the College of Medicine strategic plan, other relevant UIC strategic plans, and the Hospital’s strategic plan.
  • Contributes to the development of executive-level briefing materials for governance decisions.
  • Manage feedback on governance performance and evolve processes to address feedback
  • Assists senior leadership in shaping the agenda for ongoing strategic planning meetings and subcommittee meetings
  • Manages annual budget and expenses as requested. Prepare annual operating budgets by developing, analyzing, and presenting data, reports and information
  • Plans, assigns and reviews work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree is required in business management, education, liberal arts, engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in general management, program management, and/or strategic planning – from project scope development, planning, execution, monitoring and tracking project to planned timeline and budget
  • Experience in assessing feasibility of proposals for strategic initiatives, developing business plans and assessment
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills with an ability to prioritize, drive and complete multiple projects under deadline, and adaptively respond to changing priorities
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate a wide variety of people across multiple organizational boundaries to achieve results. Ability to lead and direct the work of others, as well as provide oversight and guidance to senior administrators and staff in pursuit of the Hospital’s mission
  • Excellent internal and external customer service skills by being tactful, helpful, and diplomatic and participate as a team member and deal effectively with other team members and stakeholders
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relations with management of all levels, colleagues, and other strategic partners and cultivate professional and business partnerships
  • Technical and analytical skills, including creativity and initiative, to conceptualize, plan and implement programs that support organizational goals and objectives
  • Decision-making ability and the ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in the performance of all assigned duties, and in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information
  • Self-motivation and initiative to develop new strategies and ideas to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness of office operations. Ability to multi-task and prioritize work accordingly to meet stringent deadlines
  • Experience with enterprise information systems data reporting and analytics
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of software
  • Outstanding written and oral presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in health services administration, healthcare management, business administration or related field is strongly preferred
  • Project management certification preferred
