Job Description
The individual selected for this position will supervise the educational services and facilities of Great Basin College (GBC) in Nye County, Nevada, including the daily operations of a center in Pahrump and other rural satellite centers. This will include the supervision of non-academic faculty employees at the GBC centers in this region.
The position, which is based in Pahrump, Nevada, requires occasional travel to the Elko campus and other areas for meetings. Travel is usually by driving a car for long distances (hundreds of miles), with or without accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). There is a significant amount of mental fatigue associated with focusing on tasks and deadlines and working with personnel and student issues. This position reports to the Vice President for Student and Academic Affairs.
Qualifications:
  • A Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Evidence of previous organizational and administrative experience, preferably in an educational setting, is required. Previous experience in a community college setting will be an asset to the applicant.
  • Communication skills are essential to the position.
  • Microsoft Office and general computer skills are required to perform the duties of this position successfully.
  • Strong human relation skills are required due to the public scope of this position. The Campus director must be able to understand and interpret instructions, bridging work accomplished in one department to another.
  • Familiarity with distance education delivery technologies is required.
  • Willingness to travel frequently throughout the service area is required.
  • Familiarity with advising college level students is preferred.
  • Familiarity with an integrated student information system is preferred.
Responsibilities:
The general responsibilities of the Director of the Pahrump Center are to develop a course schedule for fall, spring, and summer terms, assist in the recruitment of full and part-time faculty, advise students, market course offerings, conduct faculty and staff development, manage the center budget, supervise staff, develop contract training, promote economic development, and take the College’s programs and services out to the communities of Nye County and surrounding areas. The Director ensures all GBC and Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) policies are followed and maintains communication with the faculty, department chairs and administrators at the main GBC campus and other centers.
The Pahrump Director must have the ability to interpret instructions and policies and develop solutions while performing diverse tasks. Programs and activities are pre-planned for the semester and/or year, thus, ability to set priorities is necessary. General independent supervision is received with occasional referrals to supervisor. Frequent direct supervision of other employees (part-time faculty, facilitators, and campus staff) is given. The Director administers the Pahrump budget and supervises and evaluates staff in addition to supervision of 10-30 part-time faculty and staff.
The consequence of error in this job may be to adversely affect the college financially and in matters of public relations.
Specific duties include:
  • Oversee and supervise daily operations of the Pahrump Center and satellite centers in the surrounding areas. This will require a daily presence at the Pahrump Center from at least 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each workday or longer if necessary to complete all responsibilities for the day. Some weekend and evening work will be required.
  • In cooperation with the academic departments, develop course schedules for fall, spring, and summer terms including distance education and community service offerings.
  • In cooperation with Department Chairs, recruit part-time faculty.
  • In cooperation with other GBC administrators, select, train, and supervise the staff for the centers in Pahrump and surrounding areas. This includes travel to the satellite centers on a regular basis, sometimes with overnight stay required.
  • In cooperation with other GBC staff, conduct faculty and staff development activities for the Pahrump and satellite centers in the area.
  • Plan and manage the Pahrump budget.
  • Supervise Pahrump support staff.
  • Oversee janitorial services and buildings and grounds maintenance and repair.
  • In cooperation with Student Services staff, plan and direct student support services, registration, including coordination of financial aid, academic advisement, and SGA activities for Pahrump and the satellite centers in the area.
  • Promote course offerings, college programs and services within the communities of the counties.
  • Promote and coordinate joint initiatives with the local school districts.
  • Work with the Director of Continuing Education to explore for and develop opportunities in the area for community service offerings and other means of community outreach and continuing education.
  • Promote business partnerships and contract training. Participation on economic development committees within the area is expected.
  • Participate in college meetings to facilitate inter-campus and inter-departmental communications.
  • Collaborate with the GBC Foundation to develop Pahrump and surrounding area resources as requested.
  • Participate in faculty senate and other college committees as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Salary and Benefits:
Annual salary range is $75,564 - $77,000 commensurate with experience and education.
Nevada System of Higher Education benefits package includes a 401(a) defined contribution retirement plan with employees contributing 15.50 % and a matching 15.50% from the employer, medical/dental/vision plan, benefit time, 11 paid holidays, and tuition waiver at Nevada System of Higher Education colleges for the employee and family. There is no state income tax in Nevada.
