Located with the Human Relations Commission, the Director of Community Engagement takes the lead in developing, implementing, and managing the organization’s public relations and community engagement strategies. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, this position will: manage the promotion of the Commission’s projects, programs, and events; maintain and improve its various public platforms; engage with community stakeholders and media; organize and support events; and generally represent the Commission in the public sphere.
The Metro Human Relations Commission (MHRC) works to protect and promote the personal dignity, peace, safety, security, health, and general welfare of all people in Nashville and Davidson County. The Commission provides education, training, advocacy, and compliance services related to civil rights, human rights, and human relations.
- Oversee the development and continuance of community partnerships and coalition building activities to strengthen Metro Human Relations Commission (MHRC) programming and policy work.
- Organize and support events in which MHRC plays a role.
- Represent the Commission at stakeholder and community meetings.
- Create and implement a public facing communications plan, with audiences including the general public, traditional and alternative media, and Metro stakeholders to ensure the MHRC, its programs, and goals are publicized and well positioned.
- Promote and market the MHRC, as well as programs and events.
- Manage department website and social media channels.
- Write and distribute press releases, email blasts, and public facing advisories/notices.
- Support the development, implementation, and administration of recurring and special reports, policy initiatives, and special projects.
- Research and apply for grants.
- Communicate regularly with Metro departments, elected officials, and community partners regarding Commission's work and goals.
- Stay current and engaged with significant, relevant trends and development in social justice-oriented community work in Davidson County and Middle Tennessee.
- Support the development, implementation, and administration of recurring and special reports, policy initiatives, and special projects.
- Participate in long and short-term program development and planning.
- Assist with MHRC presentations, events, seminars, and workshops.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that would prepare the incumbent to perform the duties of the position at the appropriate level. Employees would typically have a Bachelor’s Degree and considerable (3 to 4 years) experience in a professional field related to public relations, media, development, and/or brand management.

Valid Driver License

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
- Masters degree
- Skill designing/editing graphics and/or images
- Experience in grant research and writing
- Experience analyzing statistical data and writing reports
- Experience working in Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Publisher)
