Director, Career Exploration & Development Job at Youngstown State University
Serves as a member of the Student Success leadership team, working collaboratively within the division and across the institution to advance degree completion and help students achieve post-graduate success. Contributes to development and implementation of strategies directed at helping the institution meet post-graduate and related objectives outlined in the institutional strategic plan.
Provides oversight of the department and leads in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of innovative career development strategies for three of the University’s five undergraduate Colleges; oversees academic advising for students exploring majors; oversees the integration of on-campus student employment into the University’s comprehensive approach to career development. Develops and maintains relationships with employers to generate a wide variety of internship and full-time employment opportunities for YSU students.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and
at least four years of professional related experience; demonstrated experience in career-related counseling or a related field; experience with personality/interests/career or similar assessment; supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, business, or a related field; understanding and appreciation of the growing role technology and social media play in delivery of career services; knowledge of career development theory and best practices in career development; knowledge of careers and career fields, employment trends, and demonstrated ability to develop employer relations; experience using Handshake; teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
Physical Requirements
In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this position will perform sedentary work.
Sedentary: work involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs may be defined as Sedentary when walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other Sedentary criteria are met.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Supervises staff and graduate interns and/or graduate assistants; assigns and reviews work; establishes timeframes for the completion of assigned tasks; trains and orients new employees; approves/disapproves requests for paid leaves; interviews candidates for employment and recommends hiring; evaluates employee work performance; receives and responds to grievances; provides assistance with the development of unit work procedures and policies.
Leads in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of curriculum, programs and services to assist students across the institution with major and career selection.
Collaborates with division colleagues and with academic and administrative departments in developing and delivering career development and readiness programs and services.
Leads career development activities for students in the assigned colleges. Collaborates with the constituents in designated colleges to enhance YSU’s approach to career development.
Oversees off-campus student employment; integrates student employment into undergraduate career development approach.
Works with employers to identify opportunities for cooperative education experiences, shadowing experiences, internships, and full-time employment.
Provides resume writing support, interview preparation, and other career-readiness activities as needed.
Oversees academic advising for Exploratory majors.
Oversees academic advising for Exploratory majors.
Oversees the implementation of the Graduate Survey; develops methodology and oversees preparation of the institution’s annual report in collaboration with internal and external entities.
Provides leadership in identifying new technologies that will enhance student learning and increase office efficiency.
Oversees and administers departmental budget and plans application of resources to effectively support programs and services.
Supports and ensures delivery of services and programs as required by any in State or Federal initiatives or objectives.
Stays current with national and local labor force changes according to NACE, Department of Labor, and other relevant research, policy and procedures, and shares insights and perspectives across campus as appropriate. Participates in professional associations and community activities related to career and employment issues such as chambers of commerce, workforce development functions, etc.
Anticipates requirements and skills needed for the position will be adjusted over time to align with changes in internal and external perspectives and principles that enhance the ability of the institution to achieve its mission.
