Job Description

The Large Power System Division currently has a Design Engineer position in the power systems cooling team. In this role, you will successfully lead the development of cooling systems and components. The power system team supports Electric Power, Industrial, Marine, and Oil & Gas applications supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) New Technology Introduction (NTI) and Continuous Product Improvement (CPI).

This individual must have good communication skills to effectively collaborate with various product development teams (analysis & test, product group, suppliers, purchasing, and tech leads) to deliver validated design solutions that meet our challenging program deliverables and timelines simultaneously.

Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology changes. Learning will focus on methods, processes and systems applied to engineering functions, key engineering skills, practical application of theory, communications and building a knowledge of Caterpillar’s products, suppliers, and customers.

Job Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform component engineering activity to meet product targets
  • Gather consolidated requirements and support development of modular and scalable component solutions
  • Conduct DFMEA, DVP & R (design verification plan & report)
  • Support/Lead design reviews
  • Lead APQP process completely followed up for component design & development
  • Lead engineering solutions to fix quality issues for NPI or CPI
  • Lead engineering solutions for component cost reduction and re-sourcing
  • As system owner, advise and answer engineering questions which come from cross functional teams and customers
  • Frequently collaborate with SDE’s, Purchasing, Product Teams and Sales & Marketing.
  • Visit suppliers to help supplier process improvement

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering curriculum and 3 years engineering work experience with component design or validation
  • Previous component design and/or technical issue resolution experience (looking for problem solvers)
  • Strong Interpersonal and communication skills in a team environment
  • Self-starter with good multitasking skills to optimize and deliver desired results under challenging requirements of quality, cost, and timelines

Top candidates may have:

  • Design control experience and good working knowledge of NPI and APQP process
  • Cooling system design experience
  • CREO 3D modeling experience
  • Ability to manage multiple programs
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good mechanical aptitude

Additional Information:

  • This position will close on Sunday June 4, 2023
  • This position can be located in Mossville IL or Lafayette IN
  • Up to 10% Travel to CAT product group customers, suppliers and Caterpillar manufacturing facilities is likely.
