The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Department Assistant in the Department of Painting and Sculpture. Reporting to the Department Manager, the Department Assistant will be responsible for providing general administrative support to two curators in the department and operational support to the department.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Performs departmental tasks, including answering phones, sorting mail, paying invoices, ordering office supplies, drafting correspondences, maintaining filing systems.
  • Answers queries that come through the department’s general telephone line, and via mail and email.
  • Maintains general orderliness of department common spaces, study center, and supply closets.
  • Makes business travel arrangements for assigned curators. Executes travel and entertainment expense reports for assigned curators.
  • Gathers data from various sources for use by supervisor or relevant staff, including collection database, library catalog, Internet research, etc.
  • Occasionally supervises visitors to the department’s study center.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 18 months prior experience relevant to the position.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Pleasant phone manner.
  • Keen attention to detail and superior organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of and interest in contemporary and modern art.
  • Must exercise good judgement and discretion.
  • Ability to take direction and work as part of a team.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite PowerPoint, Word, Excel), Gmail, and facility with Internet research.
  • Knowledge of languages in addition to English (French, German, or Spanish) a plus.
  • Experience with TMS a plus.
  • Fully vaccinated with a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and/or the World Health Organization authorized vaccine (or approved for an exemption as a reasonable accommodation due to a qualified disability or sincerely held religious belief or other legal basis).

Salary: The salary for this position is $52,282 per annum.
