- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Finance, Human Resources, or related field of study with a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience with three (3) years in supervisory/management capacity.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, design, and optimize complex processes
- Demonstrated collaboration and team building skills applied across different legal organizations and operating structures.
- Excellent leadership, analytical, operations, problem solving, and communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Former experience of working as administrative leader within a Medical School.
- Experience with the practice of anesthesia, surgery, or similarly complex medical discipline
The Department Administrator for the Department of Anesthesiology, University of Minnesota Medical School, manages all aspects of the day-to-day operations for the Department and closely collaborates with departmental leadership to develop and implement operational strategies and tactics to support world-class patient care, education, and research. This individual, reports directly to the Department Head of Anesthesiology and works with other Medical School departments, the ALRT Administrative Center, UMPhysicians, Fairview, and affiliated hospital partners to achieve common goals and overall institutional success. The individual chosen for this position will have experience in process engineering, process improvement, quality assurance, supervision, and academic medicine administration, as well as the leadership skills, innovative thinking, and ability to work in a fast paced, complex environment with multiple partners and stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
1. CLINICAL OPERATIONS: Develops, maintains, and optimizes departmental operational policies and procedures related to clinical operations performed within the Department. Understands and manages staffing models for coverage of Operating Rooms, Acute Pain, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Perioperative Assessment Center (PAC), and Chronic Pain sites across various clinic, hospital, and outpatient surgery centers. Incorporates understanding of complex contracting, billing, and compliance issues to guide decision-making and operational design.
2. PHYSICIAN SCHEDULING: Collaborates with Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Scheduling Director to deploy clinical faculty, address concerns, and resolve conflicts.
3. PHYSICIAN COMPENSATION: Works closely with Executive Vice Chair to plan, verify, and appropriately compensate physicians in conjunction with the schedule. Establishes departmental processes to capture and streamline compensation-related data. Coordinates with the ALRT Administrative Center for processing, record keeping, and communication.
4. FACULTY/PHYSICIAN AFFAIRS: Actively participates in and supports Departmental Leadership committees. Partners with ALRT and UMPhysicians Human Resources to coordinate and align human resources activities, including hiring, disciplinary actions, vacation and leave administration, employee development, and performance evaluations. Partners with ALRT Center staff to coordinate effective onboarding and exiting of faculty, UMPhysicians physicians, and locums.
5. STAFF SUPERVISION: Directly supervises department administrative staff including Physician Scheduler and Project Manager. Assigns and oversees duties, develops employee skills, and administers disciplinary actions, when necessary. Works with administrative team to develop effective administrative processes and provide a high level of customer service and responsiveness.
6. ADMINISTRATIVE PARTNERS: Partners closely with ALRT Administrative Center on finance, human resources, contracting, compensation, research, Graduate Medical Education (GME), and administration to optimize effectiveness of both the Department and the Center. Aligns with Center staff and leadership to ensure interdependencies between staffing, schedule, compensation, billing, contracts, and budgets are intact. Engages Center staff at the appropriate time in initiatives, decisions, activities, and problem-solving.
