The Department of Juvenile Justice is seeking a self motivated and goal oriented candidate to serve as a Community Coordinator. The Community Coordinator supervises, coordinates, and directs assigned community staff and is responsible for programs, services, and schedules for assigned residents residing in the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center. The selected candidate will ensure the effective implementation of supervision, security, and treatment best practices to provide residents with a safe living environment conducive to successful growth and change.

Duties include:
  • Supervising and coordinating schedules for the Counselors and Resident Specialist series to include Resident Specialist I and Resident Specialist IIs assigned to their unit. Leads weekly team meetings to assess the overall function of the team, solicit feedback, and review weekly strategies and overall community goals. This would include collaboration on treatment services, security requirements, resident’s records, and educational programs. Monitors all programs and activities, ensuring security and control of assigned community, to ensure the safety, engagement, and well being of all residents and staff.
  • Ensures community therapeutic activities occur and assumes an active role in the daily activities of the residents assigned to the community, including psycho-educational/skills program requirements, community discussion groups, therapeutic environment, rehabilitation, recreation, education, work assignments, meals, personal hygiene, and general maintenance of the living environment. Intervenes in behavioral crisis situations to ensure safety through the use of de-escalation strategies and techniques.
  • Provides behavioral coaching with residents, in accordance with program guidelines. Ensures that residents are engaged and encouraged to achieve treatment and personal learning goals to assist in their life long success. Discusses unit needs with team members during weekly team meetings to determine what Mutual Help Groups are needed.


Additional responsibilities include administrative duties and required documentation as listed in the Employee Work Profile (EWP).

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Considerable supervisory experience required. High school graduate or equivalent. Valid Driver’s License is required. Considerable knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of security, treatment, and management of services in a secure residential setting. Demonstrated ability to work independently; to effectively plan, organize, and supervise community/unit staff, and residents; and to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to review and evaluate records and reports; and to guide the implementation of residential community programming based on the progress of residents. Skilled in conflict resolution and in the use of verbal and physical intervention techniques. Considerable knowledge of supervisory techniques, performance management, employee development, security procedures, and case management procedures; knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of group facilitation and management of programs in a residential or community setting. Ability to apply evidence-based practices and case management procedures in the implementation of programs for residents; train, empower, and mentor staff; and coordinate interdisciplinary team members in the comprehensive delivery of programming. Ability to perform physical intervention (restraint) techniques in accordance with procedure and training.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications:

Bachelors degree in a related field such as Human Services, Criminal Justice, Counseling or related field preferred. Experience supervising and interacting with juveniles in a secure/residential setting.

Special Requirements
Some VADJJ positions may require working shift work, overtime, holiday, and weekends. Mandatory training such as the Department of Juvenile Justice’s Basic Skills for Security must be completed.
