The Communications Manager will coordinate with the Belin-Blank Center (BBC) leadership on the development and implementation of communication strategies. Develop content that conveys key messages for the BBC through a variety of media. Ensure that the Center’s messaging aligns with the College of Education (COE) strategic planning and overall brand messaging. Evaluate and assess the efficacy of the BBC’s communication strategies and adjust strategies as needed. Work to promote the BBC’s resources and services to constituent groups.


Specific Job Duties and Tasks

  • Manage and write content for BBC digital media outreach: email marketing, social media channels (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.), newsletters, regular blog posts, etc.
  • Copyedit written materials and format them for release to identified constituent groups; use graphic design to enhance the messages.
  • Help coordinate events and oversee promotional supplies and materials.
  • Market professional development and student program opportunities to appropriate audience (teachers, administrators, students, parents, etc.) to drive registrations.
  • Monitor site statistics (e.g., social media analytics, Google Analytics) and research and develop new ways to improve engagement and increase site traffic.
  • Evaluate impact of promotional strategies and adjust as needed.
  • Set operational strategy for outreach efforts, social media campaigns, and professional development opportunities and resources available to Iowa schools and educators, as well as student program opportunities.
  • Ensure contracts and spending on communications are within allocated budget; ensure all contractors fulfill obligations; estimate expenses for communications initiatives; coordinate with vendors and external contractors on preparing and disseminating materials.
  • Work closely with program staff to obtain, write, create, and disseminate programmatic information and qualitative evidence about the impact of activities and programs.
  • Conduct communications training for staff as needed.

About the Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development

The Belin-Blank Center was founded in 1988 and quickly developed into an internationally-respected powerhouse providing innovative programming for gifted and talented students in addition to our groundbreaking work with teachers. As we grew, the Center added counseling services and programming for twice-exceptional children—those who are both gifted and have a diagnosed disorder that impacts their learning or social-emotional development. Located in the Blank Honors Center, the Belin-Blank Center is an integral part of the University of Iowa’s College of Education.


Education or Equivalency Requirement

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English Rhetoric, Journalism, Marketing, Graphic and Web Design or an equivalent combination experience and education. Typical relevant experience is 3- 5 years.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional experience in a communications or similar role involving information gathering and development of program marketing and communications materials.
  • Experience with social media and website management.
  • Extensive understanding of effective communication; ability to effectively apply appropriate verbal and written communication behaviors. Must provide two writing samples as part of the application process.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse group of people and ability to model open, respectful, accepting, and supportive behaviors with team members.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in English Rhetoric, Journalism, Marketing, Graphic and Web Design, or related field.
  • Experience working in an education-related field, including higher education,
  • Experience producing material for diverse populations.
