About the School of Law Clinical Program and UM

The mission of The University of Montana School of Law's clinical program is to provide students the opportunity to develop lawyering skills and promote professionalism while serving the public interest. A law “clinic” is a practicum experience designed to allow third-year law students to work on actual cases and interact with live clients. The Blewett School of Law has had a clinic program in place for 50+ years and is recognized as an innovator for its skills-based curriculum. Not all law schools require clinical experience, but the general thinking in legal education is that clinical experience is valuable—especially for placement. Many schools are moving in this direction.
