Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) FT and PRN Job at Lake Butler Hospital
Job Summary:
Certified Nursing Assistants perform various duties, such as assisting staff nurses in the treatment and care of patients in the medical/surgical unit and the ER in accordance with the established methods and procedures of the hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct Patient Care Activities
- Performs selected procedures and treatments according to hospital policy and procedures.
- Helps prepare unit, patient(s), and patient bed(s) for receiving patient admissions, returning surgical patients, transfers, or emergencies.
- Assists in and, as necessary, accompanies patient in the admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
- Provides morning care (oral care, bed bath, if necessary, assists with shower, changing of bed linens, dressing patient) and evening care (freshening bed linen, undressing patient) and other general care as necessary throughout the day.
- As directed, takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, 02 stat, weight, height, pain, intake/output measurements, blood sugars, and whirlpools.
- Assist with preoperative and postoperative, such as positioning patient with proper body mechanics, applying/ utilizing special equipment as necessary, asset or feed patient, and removes trays. Distributes drinking water and other nourishments to patients.
- Under supervision, performs general care activities for patients in isolation.
- Provides post-mortem care when necessary.
- Makes rounds frequently to assigned patients, anticipates patient’s needs, and answers/ responds to patient call-lights or paging.
- Initiates CPR and participates in Basic Life Support activities when required.
- Performs RKG’s and limited respiratory duties.
- Completes the admission process in the ER in the absence of ER clerk, i.e., paperwork with signatures, applications of ID bands, insurance verification, etc.
Other Activities Related to Patient Care
- Handles and cares for patients’ valuables, clothing, and other personal property (including prosthetic devices, hearing aids, dentures, glasses, contact lens, etc.) from admission through discharge of the patient.
- Transport patients to and from various areas, as necessary attends patients to outside doctor appointments.
- Collects specimens and transports same to proper areas, as required.
- Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient to patient’s nurse. Also, contributes to nursing care plan.
- Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by reporting equipment that is out of order, reporting other problems to charge nurse, cleaning equipment as assigned, and preparing same for disinfection, and receiving supply stock on the unit if needed.
- Provides for patient safety by positioning the call bell within reach and applying correctly ordered safety devices and restraints, as well as alarm devices for patient safety.
- Attends nursing in-service education programs as assigned. Shows initiative to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills, and mandatory yearly attendance.
Abides by and supports hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Works within the scope of both hospital and departmental policies and procedures (AHCA regulations, EMTALA, HIPAA, OSHA, etc.).
- Assumes responsibility for learning new and revised policies and procedures.
- Acts as a preceptor of new personnel and overseas the orientation of new CNAs under the supervision of the RN.
- Ensures that down time during a designate shift is utilized productively.
- Overtime must be approved by ADON/DON.
- Maintains open lines of communication with co-workers, referring special needs to the charge nurse, or ADON/DON.
- Keeps abreast of new changes within the organization by reading and initializing memos, minutes, checking individual mailbox, etc. on a weekly basis.
- Adheres to OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards and Infection Control policies.
Demonstrates good interpersonal relationship skills
- Cooperates with members of the health team to achieve hospital and departmental goals and standards related to patient care.
- Has ability to recognize a problem, develop a plan of action, and reach a solution while maintaining consideration for other’s needs.
- Demonstrates willingness to accept additional assignments or duties as required.
Receptionist Duties
- Receives, greets, and directs patients, visitors, and hospital personnel arriving to or calling the nurses station and/or emergency room.
- Can give information to appropriate personnel regarding patient care activities and patient location.
- Answers phones, receives, and delivers messages to nursing personnel and patients.
- Places out-going calls to physicians, pharmacists, or other hospital personnel as needed by charge nurse.
- Updates patient charges daily.
- Maintains adequate supply of forms, supplies, and materials on inventory at nurse’s station.
- When inventory becomes low, orders appropriate material from purchasing department.
- Completes patient consensus sheet daily.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and functional working environment at the nurses’ station.
Patient Record/Chart Activities
- Maintains enough of prepared patient admission chart.
- Assembles patient chart on notification of admissions.
- Maintains enough forms involved in patient chart.
- Transcribes physician orders from patient EHR to nursing KARDEX.
- Updates patients EHR throughout shift as to CNA activities performed to patients.
- Records and charts vital signs in appropriate area of patient EHR and reports abnormal findings to patient’s nurse.
- Files diagnostic and laboratory reports in designated areas of patient charts as needed.
- Prepares and transfers patient chart to medical records upon discharge, transfer, or expiration of patient.
- M-F during night shift 12:00am-7:00am and when needed; provides clerical duties for emergency room: registering patients, completing charges, collecting payment on emergency room visits, completing laboratory or x-ray requests.
- Understands and can carry out role in emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disasters.
- Accepts other duties assigned (ward clerk, 1:1, bedside sitter, receptionist, ER clerk, etc.).
- Maintains and keeps Clean and Dirty Utility rooms clean and orderly.
- Complete and maintain KARDEX.
Other Considerations
- Able to lift 40-50 lbs., carry 20 lbs., and push/pull 250 lbs.
- All shifts are 12 hours.
- PRN staff must work one minor holiday and one major holiday (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
- PRN staff will be required to work or be on call a minimum of two days per four work week schedule. PRN staff will be paid at an hourly rate of 0.90 cents per hour while on-call. If called into work while taking call, call time will end at the time you clock into work. You then will be paid per your base hourly rate (plus differential if applicable). Once called, you are to report to work within two hours of the time notified of need.
- PRN staff are to attend a minimum of 50% of the staff, meetings, and the in-services provided every month.
- On-Call coverage per Baylor Contract.
General Duties:

Education: CNA License
Experience: Minimum of 1 year medical/surgical experience.
Skills: BLS certification required prior to first date of employment. Basic computer skills required, with understanding of Electronic Medical Record charting (EMR).
