Biomedical Electronic Technician
- Department: Biomedical Engineering Technology
- Schedule: Full Time - 40 hr/wk - Day shift - Monday - Friday 8 am-430 pm

Under limited supervision, responsible and accountable for all preventive maintenance, repair and installation of all types of hospital medical equipment.
- Maintain, repair and install hospital medical equipment and systems. Has a working knowledge of the operation, underlying physiological principles, and the practical and safe clinical application of patient care equipment.
- Troubleshoot and calibrate electronic devices. Possess in-depth knowledge of applicable safety and performance standards and hazards associated with biomedical instrumentation, equipment and systems.
- Assure that all installations are in conformance with manufacturers specifications.
- Perform preventive maintenance on all medical equipment and systems according to departmental schedules. Keep a sufficient inventory of spare parts on hand to maintain the hospital medical equipment and systems.
- Respond to emergency calls from critical areas in a timely manner.
- Receive assignments and work orders to maintain and repair all types of biomedical instrumentation such as, but not limited to, defibrillators, monitors, ECG units, suction devices, circulating fluid pumps and other equipment. Review work orders for priority status and designated time schedules. Read and interpret schematic diagrams and specifications. Order materials and supplies; prepare and assemble materials, test equipment, supplies for work to be performed. While working on hardwired electronic equipment, perform lock out, tag out procedures per departmental policy.
- Maintain all required records and documents relative to preventive and corrective maintenance activities, including hazard alerts and updates.
- Maintain appropriate operators manuals, technical documents and schematics. Complete all work orders in a timely, legible manner in order that complete and meaningful equipment histories are maintained.
- Apply cost-effective measures in order to improve efficiency and support cost containment efforts while delivering a high quality service. Work with medical equipment manufacturers on repairs and identify components needed to maintain equipment. Provide Values-Added customer service consistent with hospital goals and policy.
- Keep work area clean, orderly and safe. Assure proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrate safe work practices and attitudes, follow safety rules to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participate in organizational and department safety programs. Improve patient safety in the delivery of health care by understanding and applying the patient safety goal for SJPHS/Ascension of no preventable deaths of injuries.
- Interact occasionally with manufacturers technical and sales support people, either directly or via the internet.
- Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to work with powered and hand-held equipment.
- Ability to work with hazardous equipment.
- Ability to utilize digital and analog oscilloscopes, function generators, and patient simulation/ test equipment.
- Ability to work in hazardous patient care environments (wet locations, anesthetizing locations, isolation (positive or negative pressure rooms), etc.
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
- Certified Equipment Tech specializing in Biomedical preferred.
Education:
- Associate degree in Biomedical Electronics within 30 months of date of hire/transfer, or equivalent
associate degree with demonstrated science, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and
computer hardware and software competencies required. OR completion of AAMI BMET apprenticeship or enrolled in AAMI apprenticeship, completed within 36 months of hire. - A co-op or internship in a hospital as part of the associate degree preferred.
Work Experience:
- Cooperative or internship in Hospital or other medical equipment support activities, preferred, or 1
year in-Hospital experience, working with medical equipment-related support activities required.
Completion of Associates degree in electronics or biomedical program
Or Intern in Phase II of biomedical associate degree program.
At least a year of previous hospital experience working with or maintaining medical equipment
