  • A minimum of two years experience leading children in a formal or informal educational setting.
  • Training or experience as a camp leader or educator.

  • Must be able to travel to the Bell Museum in Saint Paul for 2 training days in June (paid travel and training hours, plus mileage, accommodations, and per diem covered by the Bell Museum)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing staff and/or volunteers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic science concepts, including agricultural, and natural sciences.
  • Experience in working with youth with cognitive, physical or other disabilities or diagnoses.
  • CPR and First Aid certified.

Hours, Pay, Other

  • Position start date: June 1, 2023

  • Position end date: August 11th, 2023

  • Can work up to 5 days per week as a temp/casual employee

    • Onboarding June 1 or 2

    • Required camp training June 5 - 9 in Grand Rapids

    • Required camp training June 14 - 15th in St Paul (travel will be compensated)

    • 16 - 40 hours per week during non-camp weeks, June 1st - June 25th and July 22nd - August 11th. Option for part time or full time temporary employment during this time period.

    • Up to 40 hours per week June 26 - 30, July 10th - July 21st

  • Pay rate: $20.00/hr

Other: Successfully passing a background check is a requirement for this position.

Campus Location: The North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC), Grand Rapids, MN

The Camp Coordinator is responsible for supporting campers and camp classroom dynamics and assisting in the management of camp staff for the second year of the Bell Museum’s Grand Rapids summer camp pilot program in 2023. The Camp Coordinator will occasionally assist the Lead Educator with co-facilitating educational experiences centered on environmental science, natural history, and agriculture for children entering 2nd - 6th grade. The Camp Coordinator works with summer camp staff and NCROC researchers to create a safe, engaging, age-appropriate, and positive learning environment for campers. This camp is a collaborative effort between the Bell Museum and the North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) and is located in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.


In addition to camp hours, there are opportunities to work additional hours (part time or full time) as an agricultural research assistant on the NCROC campus.

The unique soil, climate, and social and economic environment in north central Minnesota provide opportunities for researchers to conduct research and lead outreach programs that contribute to sustainable economic systems in the region.


Duties and Responsibilities

Camp Management (50%)

  • Communicate with parents, bussing, caterers, and Boys and Girls Club staff
  • Support camp staff in classroom behavior management and safety procedures
  • Fill in for Lead Educator roles as needed, including but not limited to:
    • Implement engaging four-day, week-long camps for up to 25 children per class using a provided curriculum that includes scientific experiments and interactive activities involving earth science, agriculture, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, art, games, and more.
    • Provide direction to Camp Assistants
  • Assist Lead Educator in creating a safe, fun and enriching camp environment. Work collaboratively with Camp staff and partner organizations.
  • Manage campers, group dynamics, and behaviors
  • Assist with setup, tear down, and clean up of camp activities.
  • Assist in facilitating activities outdoors.
  • Camp staff are required to follow all safety related guidelines, policies, and procedures at all times and ensure that campers are safe at all times. This includes enforcing and following prevailing University of Minnesota COVID-19 safety policies.
  • Interact with campers, guardians, other staff, and the general public in a safe, respectful, and professional manner.

Camp Prep, Community Outreach, and Administrative Tasks (30%)

  • Co-facilitate and prepare camp staff training
  • Prepare supplies for camp and community outreach activities
  • Coordinate programs and staff for community outreach activities and camp advertisement in the greater Grand Rapids area
  • Learn, help create, and enforce first aid and safety protocols.
  • Fill in for Lead Educator roles as needed, including but not limited to:
    • Manage set up, take down and cleaning of camp activities, and maintaining classroom facilities.
    • Conduct regular reflections/evaluations of the program and experiences with staff, partner organizations, and parents
  • Travel to the Bell Museum in Saint Paul for 2 training days in June (paid travel and training hours, plus mileage, accommodations, and per diem covered by the Bell Museum)

Agricultural Research Assistant (optional) & Other duties as assigned (20%)

  • Complete agricultural research assistant duties assigned by NCROC staff
  • Complete other additional tasks as assigned by Camp Coordinator
