Columbia College was founded in 1854 as Columbia Female College by the Methodist Conference of South Carolina. Columbia College encompasses the traditional undergraduate college as well as evening, online, and graduate programs. Total enrollment is approximately 1500. The College is noted for faculty who foster academic excellence through collaborative teaching and learning; a vital learning community in which character, ethics, and values are cultivated; the study of leadership enhanced by opportunities for practical application; programs that capitalize on advances in technology; and learning environments that extend beyond the classroom.


The Athletic Director reports to the President. The athletic director is responsible for providing leadership to and overseeing all aspects of an intercollegiate athletic program that complements the College’s educational mission. Columbia College sponsors fifteen sports: basketball (W), cross-country (M/W), golf, (M/W), soccer (M/W), softball (W), swimming (M/W) tennis (M/W), track and field (M/W), and volleyball (W). The College is a member of the National Association for Intercollege Athletics and competes in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.


Duties for the position include but are not limited to recruiting and supervising qualified staff, effective budget management, leading and monitoring the recruitment of students, assisting coaches in achieving student recruitment and retention goals, overseeing athletic facilities, ensuring compliance with all NAIA and AAC regulations, promoting student academic success, and coordinating fundraising activities for the department in cooperation with the College’s office of advancement.


The successful candidate must possess strong leadership and supervisory skills along with excellent oral and written communication skills. A bachelor’s degree is required, with a master’s degree preferred. Experience working in a collegiate athletic environment is required, with NAIA experience preferred. It is important to relate to diverse constituencies including faculty, staff, students, parents, donors, alumni, and community members.
