Associate Director, Research and Evaluation

Position Summary


Teaching Matters is a national nonprofit organization, headquartered in New York City, with the mission to close the opportunity gap of a radically unequal education system for underserved and historically marginalized children. From states and districts to schools and classrooms, we partner to help teachers and school leaders develop the skills they need to teach well, lead their peers and drive school-wide improvement.


The Research and Evaluation Program Officer is a full-time, salaried role reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, with a hybrid reporting (“dotted-line”) to the divisional Vice Presidents. This role is responsible for supporting the strategy and implementation to evaluate and share the impact of Teaching Matters’ professional development services on districts, schools, teachers and students, as well as designing and implementing those systems. The role will own the evaluative framework of our programs and service offerings, ensuring comprehensive, data-centered, and research-aligned activities anchor our work and are being communicated compellingly to funders and clients. The Research and Evaluation Program Officer will oversee the operational aspects of data management, as well as take a leading role in our relationships with major funders, clients, and other stakeholders, opening the pathway for larger research projects such as federal grants and other large scale research activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inform and support aspects of evaluation and continuous improvement work across programmatic projects that align to best practices and research.

  • Support the research, design, data stories and presentations related to large grant-related initiatives, including relationships with the funder and external evaluators, with a focus on connecting work back to the larger organization/strategy, leveraging this work to inform the design of other programs.

  • Write and manage IRB approval and reporting processes and facilitate efficient data collection per standard acceptable policies and procedures. Develop strategic partnerships at the state, district and school levels.

  • Contribute to design, launch and implementation of new services and programs in collaboration with program staff and leadership. Develop logic models and data collection methods, including leading the actions associated with those methods, in collaboration with program design members. Work with the program managers to provide formative support as well as the evaluation of short, and longer-term results of programs.

  • Contribute to coherence across customized services through initiatives to articulate evidence-based coaching practices across services and programs, as well as the anchoring in CR-SE for all of our coaching services.

  • Review and synthesize academic literature on best practices relating to Teaching Matters’ goals. Monitor competitors, research, product innovation as they relate to student outcomes and research student outcomes and needs that are local and national

  • Support board of directors’ subcommittee for evaluation, preparing all needed materials and reports, including leading such presentations and communications to the board.


Key Qualifications:


  • PhD in a field relevant to education or within completion of a PhD program preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant research and evaluation (in K-12 education preferred) experience.

  • Masters degree required.

  • Experience including proposal writing, project design and management, knowledge management, qualitative and quantitative approaches, data collection, data analysis/syntheses, interpretation, developing and applying tools, reporting, and disseminating findings.

  • Experience in urban schools.

  • Experience navigating successfully the NYC Department of Education IRB process is a plus.

  • Technology skills with current computer software, including word processing and online collaboration tools.

  • Strong critical thinking skills.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Demonstrates deep commitment to Teaching Matters’ mission, vision, and core values.


Perks and Compensation:


  • This position is full-time 40 hours per week. An ideal candidate would be based in NYC, or be willing to travel to NYC schools on a semi-regular basis.

  • Salary range: $90,000-110,000 per year, based on experience and credential.

  • 403b options, with 6% match after one year of employment.

  • Full benefits available, including generous PTO.
