Associate Artistic Director


Statement of Job:

Reporting directly to the Artistic Director, the Associate Artistic Director supervises productions starting with the casting process through their respective openings. They serve as the Line Producer for selected shows and as the artistic representative for community partnerships. They directly supervise the Associate Producer and Casting and Producing Associate.

Job Duties

  • Demonstrates proficiency in bringing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) principles to all interactions with artists and stakeholders served by the theatre.
  • Works with the Artistic Director in the planning of the season including: play selection, putting together the individual production teams (director, designers, etc.), scouting productions and plays for the Huntington producing and/or presenting options, and serves as an external contact with regards to future productions and/or co-productions (with outside producers, not-for-profit theatres, agents, etc.).
  • Serves as Line Producer for selected shows in the season.
  • Maintains a presence throughout the tech process for all assigned shows.
  • With the Artistic department, generates, maintains, and evaluates The Huntington’s relationships will all artists, ensuring that The Huntington continues to work with individuals who align with our Code of Respect.
  • Serves as the Artistic representative for all community outreach partnerships, generating and maintaining local relationships, exploring additional opportunities for work both in and with the Huntington community, and supervising this work.
  • Guides and supports individual directors throughout the casting process.
  • Serves as the primary contact for out-of-town Casting Directors.
  • Works along with the Artistic staff in identifying projects for further development and/or possible production.
  • Collaborates with Production, General Management, and Company Management on all issues related to the successful mounting of all shows.
  • Collaborates with Artistic and Marketing with regard to published show specific materials.
  • Attends Production and Department Head meetings (either in person or via Zoom).
  • Works with Stage Management from pre-production through each show’s opening.
  • Supervises Associate Producer and Casting and Producing Associate.

If the Associate Artistif Director is selected and chooses to direct a Huntington staged reading, workshop, etc. such work shall be included as part of regular job duties and will not include additional compensation.


In addition to the duties listed above, the Huntington Theatre Company expects the following of each employee: adheres to HTC policies and procedures; works in a safe manner; performs duties as workload necessitates; maintains a positive and respectful attitude; communicates regularly with supervisor about department issues; demonstrates efficient time management and prioritizes workload; demonstrates regular and consistent attendance and punctuality; meets department productivity standards; participates in HTC events as needed or required; and completes other duties as assigned.


Requirements

  • 10 years of experience in working in the theatre in all aspects, from acting to stage management to producing to casting to education to community outreach. Or comparable experience.
  • Adept at handling confidential information with excellent judgment and discretion.
  • Superior writing, interpersonal, and oral communications skills.
  • Must be comfortable serving as a representative for the company.
  • Able to handle many time-sensitive projects at once.
  • Demonstrate effective organizational skills and possess advanced computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel) and Zoom.
  • Flexible, creative, self-motivated, and willing to work extended hours on occasion, sometimes without much notice, in order to help the Artistic department meet deadlines and manage workload.
  • All other duties as assigned

Salary: $105k – $120k per year
