The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

Function/Duties of Position:

The Assistant Staff Scientist will perform advanced gene editing and genetic engineering studies in embryos for the purpose of creating important models of human disease and systems that are needed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of gene editing technologies. The position requires a high degree of independence and the ability to problem-solve, as well as to design and perform experiments. The responsibilities of this position include being familiar with and experience in overseeing the management and use of research animals for approved studies, assisting with animal/surgical procedures, performing embryo injections, embryo culture, embryo manipulation, and the molecular assessment of gene editing outcomes (whole genome amplification, PCR, next-gen sequencing, Sanger sequencing, basic bioinformatics skills, etc.). This position also requires the ability to independently organize and complete the submission of manuscripts, present research findings at scientific meetings, and supervise research staff and students with minimal oversight. This position may require covering for other staff for general/routine laboratory duties such as cleaning glassware, autoclaving, incubator/CO2 cylinder monitoring, and the ability to recognize what is needed to perform experiments and overall preparedness to aid in maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in relevant biomedical field and 3+ years of relevant postdoctoral work experience
  • Prior experience in assisted reproductive technologies and embryology
  • Experience with embryo handling and manipulation
  • Significant experience and knowledge of molecular biology
  • Excellent organizational and scientific communication skills (written and oral)
  • Laboratory, computer, and database experience
  • Experience in oversight of technical staff
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to carry and lift up to 50lbs
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Using gene editing techniques or transgenic approaches to create large animal models of disease
