Position Purpose:

The incumbent will be accountable for ensuring the highest level of treated wastewater quality while optimizing operation of the wastewater treatment plant. Assists with the planning, organization and management of the daily operations, maintenance, and collection departments. Ensures compliance with established environmental, safety, operating, and emergency response procedures. Provide exceptional customer service by maintaining ongoing client interface, keep client informed, and enhancing client relations.

Primary Duties/responsibilities:

  • Supervises day-to-day operation of the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Organizes, directs and maintains the uninterrupted flow of operations in the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Assists in planning, assigning and supervising the work of Department Supervisors.
  • Inspects Wastewater Plant installations and directs or take required corrective actions.
  • Assists in maintenance of plant records and in preparation of reports.
  • Inspects plant log records, gauges, meters and other plant testing and measuring devices to ensure that equipment is functioning properly.
  • Follows regulatory and contractual requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Assists Project Manager and Clients with annual budget preparation.
  • Services as a resource for all staff and works with Project Manager on wastewater quality process changes.
  • Interfaces with vendors and contractors regarding project related issues.
  • Responsible for assisting Project Manager with wastewater quality at outfall.
  • Makes recommendations to Project Manager for operational improvements including observed design issues and implementation of those improvements.
  • Develops and assists in: startup and testing procedures, standard operating procedures, safety procedures, preventive maintenance procedures, emergency response procedures, and operation and maintenance manuals for treatment plant.
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, initially managing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Monitoring employee operation of equipment to ensure efficient operation.
  • Works with department managers to plan and schedule designated wastewater plant processes such as calibration of plant equipment, wastewater shut-down/start-up, tanks cleaning, etc.
  • Commitment to health, safety and protection of environment: The incumbent supports Veolia’s commitment to safety by complying with the programs regarding health, safety and protection of the environment. The incumbent demonstrates safe work practices, takes part in safety meetings, and advises the Project Manager of any non-conforming conditions.

The work environment is typically in an office environment but requires periodic inspection of the treatment facilities where the employee will also be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and an industrial plant environment which involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment also involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.


Qualifications


Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Degree in Business or Engineering or equivalent related experience.
  • Minimum of three to five years progressive lead/supervisory experience at a 5 mgd wastewater treatment plant or larger.
  • Computer skills required. Proficiency in Google Docs and Microsoft Office recommended,

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively supervise administrative, department managers, and union employees
  • Ability to work harmoniously and tactfully
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and submit accurate reports
  • Assist in employee selection, training, supervision and evaluation
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot, repair and adjust pumps, chemical feed machines and other wastewater treatment plant equipment
  • Ability to take accurate readings and to make arithmetical computations
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of the proper methods of repairing, lubricating and maintaining mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in wastewater treatment, pumping, and collection system operations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards connected with wastewater plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of chemistry and analytical tests as applied to water treatment.
  • Computer applications as they relate to area assigned.
  • English usage, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Drivers license.
  • Valid CT Grade 4 Wastewater Operator Certificate or ability to achieve in 18 months.
