Nature of Work

Under general direction of Director of Finance, administers, coordinates and assists with all accounting functions of the City of North Platte.

Examples of Work Performed

Assists the Director of Finance with the accounting program in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles as defined by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants to include proper accounting of all municipal funds and account groups.

Ensures that all City departments, divisions and agencies comply with established accounting procedures and policies; responsible for monthly financial statements and related subsidiary records; assists with the annual audit of all municipal funds and account groups.

Helps develop and implement approved policies, plans and programs for the financial, billing, accounting and record keeping functions; develops and establishes controls necessary to assure the accuracy and security of all records and funds; notes variances from approved or authorized practice and initiates action to insure established controls are maintained.

Insures accuracy, completeness and timeliness of financial reports, records and related documents; prepares work order final reports; provides information to management; maintains capital accounts; improves financial or record keeping functions and procedures as necessary; provides technical support to other divisions; initiates actions to improve work efficiency and cost effective operations.

Performs other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.

Desirable Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of the approved principles and standard practices of budgetary and accrual accounting, funds management, revenue administration, purchasing and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures and of standard office and accounting equipment.
  • Working knowledge of City personnel policies and benefits program.
  • Ability to make logical decisions regarding interpretation of policies, customer billings and related matters.
  • Ability to establish sound priorities on work assignments so as to assure an orderly and timely work flow through departments.
  • Demonstrable ability to use Microsoft Windows and Office Professional applications.

Experience and Training

A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; two years of experience in a municipal accounting environment and/or certification as a Certified Public Accountant is preferred.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $4,692.02 - $6,254.41 per month
