Position Summary:

The Academic Advisor works as part of a multi-functional team to support the success of students enrolled in distance learning (online or hybrid) courses or programs. The Academic Advisor reports to the Lead Academic Advisor.


Primary Duties:

  • Monitors academic progress and other educational success issues, persistence, and retention of students learning in an online or hybrid environment.
  • Provides a proactive advising culture sensitive to the needs of adult learners and other special populations.
  • Connects students to the offices, resources, and services necessary for satisfactory academic progression.
  • Assists distance learning students with educational planning and understanding of institutional and program academic requirements.
  • Maintains online “office hours” to serve remote students, including scheduled evening and weekend hours.
  • Attend meetings to provide updated information on enrollment and academic advising issues as required.
  • Works with students and faculty to appropriately schedule and register students for each session.
  • Contacts students who are not participating during the first week of class or as expected.
  • Tracks and contacts students who fail to register for upcoming sessions or who “stop out” to determine whether their academic and support needs are being met.
  • Serves as a single point of contact to problem solve student-related issues.
  • Works effectively with UC’s Student Leadership & Engagement staff.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements in student support services or programs and make recommendations to better support adult and military students’ needs.
  • Engage and develop relationships through written and oral communication with adult and military learners, promoting and encouraging a positive and professional experience.
  • Contacts faculty to resolve or understand student-related issues or problems, serving as a liaison between students and School Deans when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required, preferably in student development, counseling, or related field.
  • At least one year of experience in higher education working directly with students.
  • Understanding of the unique needs of distance learners, active duty and veteran students.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Understanding of outcomes-based / competency-based learning.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and other university departments.
  • Knowledge of web-based communication tools and willingness to learn UC’s Moodle rooms LMS (eLearn) and necessary technology tools.
  • Must be able to work independently while being held accountable for progress towards the grant project’s goals.
