Youth Violence Prevention Coordinator Job at LOWELL COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER
Full-time (40 Hours/week). Non-Exempt. Some evenings and weekends required. The Lowell Community Health Center (Lowell CHC) Teen BLOCK will hire a Youth Violence Prevention Coordinator to oversee the implementation of the proposed initiatives focused on violence prevention, youth leadership and youth development. This position requires an individual committed to youth-driven leadership, health and social justice, and adaptable in a variety of community settings. Outreach efforts will be coordinated with various community based agencies, regional local health, school and police departments, faith based organizations and with all Lowell CHC departments and programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Community Outreach and Program Coordination
- Lead coordination of youth violence prevention activities including Youth Reaching Out, Youth Violence Prevention Coalition, peace promotion events, and the Annual Dance 4 Peace Event.
- Coordinate monthly youth-driven coalition meetings, field-learning experiences, trainings, retreats, events, and major activities of Teen BLOCK in collaboration with Lowell CHC youth development department staff and programs.
- Attend and actively participate at appropriate trainings and meetings relevant to key youth development initiatives that may benefit clients or key staff.
- Serve as a liaison between the program and service providers including community outreach, involvement, and advocacy.
- Provide advocacy for initiative priorities through a strong presence at community meetings, events and activities.
- Represent Lowell CHC mission and programs at meetings, conferences, on the phone and in person
- Work with multiple Lowell CHC departments to ensure all internal and external partners stay on time and on plan
- Prepare reports in accordance with Lowell CHC procedures and ensure that the reports are submitted in a timely manner as required by Teen BLOCK Manager and participate in staff meetings.
- Assist with required data collection and evaluation reporting as directed.
- Provide evaluation support to Teen BLOCK Manager.
- Reports to Lowell CHC Teen BLOCK Manager.
- Perform other duties as requested to support the mission of Teen BLOCK and Lowell CHC.
Youth Development
- Provide supervision and mentoring for youth peer ambassadors who are hired health center staff
- Foster the development of at-risk youth from the ages of 13-18 years old
- Assist program Teen BLOCK youth with accessing health care, testing and treatment and referrals and educate members on these processes.
- Support youths to develop skills and knowledge necessary for positive decision-making and supportive of themselves and others.
- Maintain positive relationship with parents of youth through ongoing communication
- Collect input from parents, youth, and community residents assuring target population representation in decision-making processes.
Maintain standards that ensure quality of care in the delivery of program services and compliance with state and federal guidelines.
Grant funded position, available pending grant availability.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The individual must possess:
- Required:
- Community organizing skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of primary prevention work, particularly violence prevention and substance use prevention education.
- Strong presentation skills
- Two to four years’ experience in an adolescent service setting or health related position
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse cultures.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Proficient computer skills in MS Office are required.
- This position also requires a background or knowledge of project coordination.
- Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Education or related field
- Community Health Worker Training Certificate
- Some supervisory skills
LANGUAGE SKILLS Bilingual in English and Spanish, Khmer, Portuguese or Swahili is a plus.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Yes.
HOURS: Monday through Thursday, 8:30am – 7:00pm. Some nights and weekends required.
