Youth Care Staff- Night Shift Job at SafeHouse of the Desert
Join our Thousand Palms team! Operation SafeHouse is a 24-hour emergency shelter whose mission is to serve runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth ages 11 – 17 in Riverside County. Services include up to three-weeks of emergency shelter, nutritious meals, counseling, attempts at family reunification, on-site education program, aftercare and a 24- hour toll-free crisis line.

POSITION: Youth Care Staff
Shift: Night and Overnight available
Position Summary:
Responsible for implementation of procedures and programs for shelter residents. Support/implement the successful integration of treatment and educational services, to ensure that the needs of the residents are met, and ensures the safety, security and cleanliness of the shelter facilities.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supervise clients at all times. Safety of clients is the primary responsibility. If clients are in the Recreation Room, a staff member needs to be in the room with them (this goes for the living room and outside as well).
- Sign in and out for each shift. Attend all scheduled shifts as assigned on time.
- Know, understand and implement Title 22 regulations
- Before shift change, conduct a perimeter check and a head count with previous shift staff on duty.
- Read the shift log for updated information pertaining to shelter clients.
- Turn off outside lights during day shift; turn on outside lights during evening shift.
- Complete a daily log and progress notes on each client. If a client is on a pass, log it in on their Progress Note and daily log. Fill out Group Log. The progress note should include notification of the child’s progress; identification of the possible need for professional services; and communication of such findings to professional staff.
- Complete all intakes and departures during shift and complete CPS reports if abuse has been reported. All Suspected Child Abuse Reports must be reported immediately and mailed and faxed within 36 hours.
- All paperwork must be completed before staff leaves. Refer to Policy and Procedure Manual for all forms that needs to be completed and for proper completion of these forms.
- Place names of all new intakes along with pertinent information (i.e., if client is on medication, if client is a ward of the court, or if client has a court date set, etc.) on board. Erase names of all departures.
- Answer all phone calls and take messages as needed and date and time all calls.
- Make sure house is cleaned, paperwork is completed, and all other pertinent information is passed on to the next shift.
- Examples of information that needs to be communicated to incoming staff; (clients on passes, possible intakes or departures, person transporting clients, possible visitors, clients on suicide watch, clients on medication, and behavioral problems).
- Attend all staff meetings (last Thursday of each month).
- Lead Youth Care staff is in charge of shift.
- Complete all donation forms and put away before shift is over.
- All intake belongings are to be marked and secured before shift is over.
- Laundry should be washed, dried, and put away by staff. The clients may fold the laundry as a chore.
- It is your responsibility to pick up and clean up after yourself.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma and 2 yrs experience working with adolescents in the human service field.
- Current enrollment in college degree program preferred.
- Ability to model appropriate independent living skills and communicate and interact effectively with youth from a variety of social/cultural backgrounds.
- Crisis intervention experience and good documentation skills.
- Valid CA driver’s license and clean driving record
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Good computer knowledge and skills.
- Clear state and FBI criminal background check.
Work environment:
- Indoor work facility
- Moderate/loud noise level
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position
- Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds occasionally.
- The person in this position needs to frequently move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, and check-in on clients.
