Are you seeking experience in the field of wildlife and natural resources management?
The Utah National Guard is looking for a seasonal wildlife technician to conduct surveys and monitoring on Camp Williams. Camp Williams is located approximately 15 miles south of Salt Lake City in the town of Bluffdale. The technician will work as part of the Natural Resources Management team to conduct surveys and carry out monitoring for nesting raptors and breeding birds found on the installation. The technician will also have the opportunity to assist with other wildlife-related projects as well.
The position is temporary (approximately March–August). The schedule is 40 hours/week, generally four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday. However, some flexibility in hours will be required for surveys needing to be performed early in the morning or later in the evening.
Job Overview
The primary focus of the work will be conducting surveys for nesting raptors, monitoring nest success, and recording data for a long-term monitoring program. The technician will also be conducting standardized point count surveys for breeding birds. The technician may also be required/can assist with other wildlife surveys as well.
The Ideal Candidate
- Successful applicants will have experience conducting breeding bird surveys and be able to identify birds found in the mountain west by sight and sound. More than one-year experience will be preferred.
- Applicants should be comfortable using Microsoft word and excel to enter data.
- Applicants should also be able to operate GPS and GIS, experience mapping and processing spatial data with GIS software is preferred but not required.
- Strong navigation skills with maps and compass/GPS are important.
- Strong quantitative/statistical analysis skills are desired but not required, opportunity exists for further analysis of data and potential publication if the applicant has desire.
- Applicants must be able to work independently, hike in steep, rugged terrain in hot, dry conditions, and have a current driver's license.
- The technician will use ATVs for field travel and should be comfortable driving on unmaintained dirt roads.

Example of Duties
- Navigate to existing avian points/plots and conduct point count-based breeding bird surveys.
- Follow precise protocols for Monitoring existing raptor nests and surveying areas for new nests and nesting behavior.
- Use telemetry to locate birds and collect spatial data.
- Analyze, summarize, and/or review data; report findings, interpret results, and/or make recommendations.
- Identify data and information which suggest developing patterns of problems or complaints, from which general or specific trends and patterns can be discerned, suggesting a need for further investigation.
- Write or draft technical reports, articles, or related material based on research, investigation, or analysis.
- Other tasks as assigned.

Supplemental Information
- Obtained or worked toward a B.A. or B.S. in wildlife, biology, conservation, or a related field.
- Must be willing and able to work in a hot, dry climate and able to hike cross-country in steep, rocky, heavily vegetated sites carrying up to 20 lbs of equipment. Additionally, Camp Williams is an active military training range with special safety concerns.
- Must pass a background check and maintain a good driving record; must have current government-issued (U.S. - federal or state) picture id.
