The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, has a seasonal position (no benefits) available at Northern Utah Interagency Fire Center in Draper, Utah. The Center is primarily responsible for wildland fire suppression and support activities but may respond to all-risk incidents as needed or directed. This appointment will last from approximately June 1 to October 31, with the possibility of an extension. Housing is not provided.
Job Requirements
Applicant must be 18 years of age or older and have a current and valid Utah Drivers License at the time of employment.
Principal Duties
- Maintain resource status and tracking systems and operates telecommunications systems.
- Collects, processes, collates, and submits incident information to support fire operations (e.g. fire reports, smoke permits, spot weather forecasts, prescribed fire burn requests).
- Processes weather information (e.g., spot weather forecasts, weather station observations, current and forecasted weather, lightning detection, and fuel moisture levels). This information is used to determine burning indices, preparedness levels, and staffing levels for suppression and aviation resources.
- Inputs data into a number of fire-related computer applications (e.g., incident qualification records, fire reporting systems, and automated dispatch systems) and may make the initial assessment of outputs.

Each has varying procedures and policies from the other. The office is a high-functioning team that goes the distance to get the job done with high standards in mind. You will work long hours during the summer months of employment.
Supplemental Information
- May require irregular hours and schedules, which may include being asked to work 16-hour shifts a day and on your days off, overtime, and holiday work to meet the needs of emergency situations.
- Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated, e.g. safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
- Multi-tasking with several radio transmissions, phones, and managers. At times there can be confusion as you wait for direction from managers and supervisors.
- Must be available to work long hours and days off during high fire activity. May be asked to return to the dispatch office after hours to assist with new emerging fires. There is no housing available at this location.
