The Water Treatment Operator Trainee-IV performs extremely technical and specialized work as related to the Brunswick County 211 Water Treatment Plant located at 4305 Southport-Supply Road SE in Southport, NC. The 211 WTP is a 6 million gallon per day (MGD) drinking water facility that pulls water from the Castle Hayne Aquifer. The facility utilizes lime softening, up-flow clarifiers, sand filtration and chloramination for disinfection. Work involves the operation of water treatment plant processes and related equipment, distribution system monitoring, and customer service. Work also involves collecting and testing water samples, and controlling mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and chemical feed systems associated with the treatment process. Responsible for making flow rate changes, chemical dosing changes, and providing overall high-quality drinking water to Brunswick County. Responsible for assisting in the preparation of a variety of reports, maintaining records as related to the water treatment process, and answering inquiries/concerns from the public. Must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assignments. Performs janitorial, maintenance, and other duties as required. Employee may also be required to work in other water treatment facilities within the county as needed. Employee shall be required to serve as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) or Backup-ORC for the designated facility or system. Reports to the Chief Utility Plant Operator. Brunswick County Public Utilities has implemented a career ladder advancement program for those employees seeking to make a career working in the water and wastewater services field. Placement as Operator Trainee, I, II, III, or IV based on certification and experience.

Qualifications

High school diploma and one (1) to five (5) years of experience in a water/wastewater treatment or industrial facility preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Associate's degree in the field of natural sciences highly preferred.

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License required.
  • Possession of Grade C or higher Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the State of North Carolina relevant to the facility preferred or must obtain certification within the probationary period.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate personal computer, related office equipment, and motor vehicle. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
