Reports to Operations Manager

Job purpose

The Water Operator will be responsible for inspecting, sampling, maintenance, and repairs on the system facilities and equipment in the water distribution system.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Install, read, test and repair water meters, hydrant testing and maintenance of water distribution apparatuses.
  • Maintain water pumping and storage facilities.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Assist with major equipment maintenance and repairs as assigned.
  • Perform on-call duties as assigned.
  • General mechanical, plumbing diagnosis.
  • Reading and comprehending maps, diagrams, and regulations/policies.
  • Geography and street locations.
  • Environmental standards and compliance requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, employees, and the public.
  • Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Use safe working practices in the performance of duties in accordance with OSHA. Ensure proper safety practices are used by all.
  • Ensures the logging, recording, and reporting of data in accordance with operating procedures, operating licenses, provincial legislation, and regulations.
  • Maintains assigned tools, equipment, personal protection equipment and reports repairs and/or deficiencies.
  • Must become familiar with troubleshooting typical problems found in water distribution systems.
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate, and recommend sound solutions to problems of routine nature.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Perform Customer Service Inspections
  • Perform Inventory Tracking on Dispatches
  • Stock Inventory
  • Perform Annual Inventory Count for audit
  • Perform Annual flushing to remove sediment build up in main water lines.
  • Maintain System for Tertiary TCEQ Inspection
  • Respond to on-call emergencies
  • Perform Calibrations on all Lab Equipment used as well as Reports.
  • Perform underground service locating, marking and notification within 48hr notice.
  • Aware of latest technical standards in the operation and maintenance of the system
  • Change out, repair, receive inventory of Chlorination System.
  • Handle emergency and urgent situations while performing duties in the field.
  • Leak-detection procedures and repairs
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Inspect Pump Stations and all related facilities and equipment to assure effective operations are maintained and working properly
  • Read Customer Meters once a month.
  • Monitor Member adhering to Water Restrictions and safety
  • Climb storage tanks, as necessary.
  • Perform Valve Exercising Program including Reports.
  • Check, standardize and calibrate instruments, analyzers, and chemical feed pumps.
  • Dispatches requesting repair, replacement of water meters.
  • Able to identify safety hazards in the work environment.
  • General types of contaminants of drinking water
  • Know diseases caused by waterborne Organisms.
  • Perform Chemical Analysis as it relates to the treatment of water.
  • Interpret lab results for bacteriological analyses.
  • Start-up, shutdown, and safety procedures for chlorinators and other disinfection equipment
  • First aid procedures for victims of chlorine gas
  • Critical safeguards of systems
  • Extracts samples, performs test, identifies treatment adjustments.
  • Manages the application of chemicals to process.
  • Record all data to Reports, Logs or Spreadsheets
  • Requirements for deadlines with reporting and recordkeeping
  • Skill in the use of office equipment and technology as relates to Procedures for Cross Training

  • Quarterly Accuracy Test (Equipment Calibrating and Testing)
  • Daily Residual Reports
  • Customer Service Inspections
  • Monthly Dead End Flushing Report

OTHER IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:
CLIMBING: Ability to climb into and out trenches, fences, storage tanks etc.
CLEANING: Clean parts and machinery, clean buildings, and work areas and vehicles.
CRAWLING: Under vehicles and equipment.
DRIVING: Cars and trucks.
HOLDING: Tools with both hands and all fingers.
KNEELING: In one place for long periods of time.
PULLING AND/OR PUSHING: Using both hands to operate large hand tools and/or pull such things as hoses or equipment.
SIGHT: Must be capable of seeing equipment and gauges.
STANDING: Must be capable of standing for long periods of time.
STOOPING: Must be able to stoop over for long periods of time.
LIFTING: Able to lift 50lbs (2 man lift 100lbs).

WORKING CONDITIONS (ENVIRONMENTAL):
EXTREME COLD: Must be able to withstand temperatures as low as 20 degrees for up to an hour at one time.
EXTREME HEAT: Must be able to withstand extremely high temperatures for up to four hours at a time.
WORKING OUTDOORS: Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, day or night.
CONFINE SPACES: Works in confined spaces.
ODORS/CHEMICALS: Some exposure to mechanical, electrical, explosive, fume, odor, dust chemical, and toxic waste hazards, using proper safety precautions.
SAFETY: Uses good judgement to work safely and use equipment property.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

♣ Ability to understand and follow digital, oral, and written instructions.
♣ Ability to work without direct supervision.
♣ Ability to attend and understand technical courses.
♣ Ability to assume responsibility.
♣ Ability to detect problems in equipment operations.
♣ Ability to make sound, independent, decisions requiring distribution operations.

Qualifications

Qualifications include:

  • TCEQ Class C Water Distribution Operator License
  • Customer Service Inspector License is a plus but not required
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability – to pass drug and background check.
  • Ability - to work well with others.
  • Skills - operating a variety of hand tools.
  • Skills – proficient on cell phone, tablets, and computers
  • Experience – Two+ years’ experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Pay: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour
