Southside Virginia Community College is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Security Officer III, on the John H. Daniel Campus, located in Keysville, VA. This position serves a diverse student population and requires an exceptional customer service attitude. The primary objective for the position of Campus Security Officer is to adequately create and maintain a safe and secure campus environment for students, staff, and visitors of the college.

Southside Virginia Community College is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Security Officer III, on the John H. Daniel Campus, located in Keysville, VA. This position serves a diverse student population and requires an exceptional customer service attitude. The primary objective for the position of Campus Security Officer is to adequately create and maintain a safe and secure campus environment for students, staff, and visitors of the college.
Major responsibilities include:
- Create and maintain a safe campus environment
- Respond to emergencies and calls for assistance as they arise
- Patrol and inspect all areas and report any deficiencies or hazardous conditions
- Enforce college, local and state rules and regulations
- Monitor visitor access to campus and access control systems
- Monitor camera systems and report any operating deficiencies
- Open and secure buildings at appropriate times
- Record incidents and maintain incident reports
- Complete and maintain required documentation including daily patrol logs, daily crime logs, and annual safety and security reports in compliance with the Clery Act
- Conduct inspections on safety and security equipment
- Serve on assigned college committees such as the Threat Assessment Team
- Serve as liaison between the college and local/ state law enforcement agencies
- Provide security at special events and other college functions
- Coordinate and conduct required safety drills at scheduled intervals
- Oversee the student work study safety patrol program
- Coordinate the college’s community service program
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated flexibility to work any shift assigned; day or evening (Monday through Friday) and occasional weekends, on campus or at off-campus centers
- Previous experience in security or law enforcement environment
- Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license
- Satisfactory driving record required; Official driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles must be presented as a part of the selection process
- Effective communication skills both orally and in writing
- Basic knowledge of security policies and procedures
- Requires working knowledge of Gmail, Microsoft Word, and Excel
- Moderate lifting and extensive walking required
- Must be able to obtain the DCJS CSO (Campus Security Officer) Certification and DCJS Unarmed Security Officer Certification within six (6) months of hire
- Criminal background check required prior to employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Current certification by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as a Campus Security Officer (CSO) preferred
- K-12 or Higher Education experience preferred
Special Requirements
Satisfactory reference and background checks, as well as satisfactory DMV driving record are a condition of employment.
The successful candidate is limited to an average of 29 hours per week in compliance with the Affordable Care Act.
