The Opportunity:


Mattel is seeking a well-rounded business leader to head the company-wide sustainability initiatives. This position, located in El Segundo, California, will develop strategies, by platform, driving initiatives from packaging to product to operations. This position will also be the face of sustainability for Mattel, developing meaningful and innovative programs in collaboration with key internal stakeholders across the Mattel enterprise, including manufacturing plants, engineering, supply chain, packaging, brand teams, legal and overall operations. Primary focus will be in 4 key areas: Green Energy; Zero Waste; Carbon Footprint; and Sustainable Products and Packaging. This role will also partner closely with Corporate Communications and PR teams to develop an internal and external communication strategy to promote awareness of initiatives.

The candidate must have prior experience working with sourcing, manufacturing and understands the various social and environmental impacts that are created in the areas of the product value chain. The candidate must be exceptionally strong in problem solving and negotiating skills and must possess a passion for leading transformative changes in the ways working and an ability to work cross-functionally in driving solutions.

What Your Impact Will Be:

  • Lead the effort on the integrated sustainability strategy, with associated goals designed to drive business results, reduce risk, and ensure continuity and enhance brand value
  • Embed sustainability into the innovation, brand-building and everyday business practices of Mattel
  • Develop, source, and implement a global carbon footprint roadmap aligned to global strategies
  • Partner with Manufacturing Leaders in developing responsible sourcing programs with priorities on recyclable resin. Build in strategies on how to reduce cost over time.
  • Source innovative solutions on renewable energy, driving strategies that meet our sustainability targets of 100% for 2030 and beyond
  • Partner with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) to drive strategy development and measurable operating footprint improvements that reduce energy and water use, carbon footprint and waste generation and recovery.
  • Partner with Procurement and Compliance on responsible sourcing programs to achieve 2030 sustainable goals and establish mechanisms to track progress.
  • Partner with the Design & Development organization to provide insight and direction regarding sustainability/renewable trends and provide guidance on commercial benefits of sustainable initiatives
  • Keep senior leadership and Investor Relations abreast of sustainability trends, priorities and strategies including key initiatives
  • Collaborate with the Company’s internal groups (e.g., plant operations, engineering, environmental, legal, supply chain, marketing, etc.) to maintain an integrated and coordinated sustainability plan
  • Measure and track sustainability metrics that align to short and long-range business strategy of the company
  • Secure and leverage senior level commitment and support for integrating sustainability considerations into core processes and decision-making
  • Serve as the internal leader and subject matter expert for sustainability, monitoring emerging trends, programs, and issues, and communicating and educating others on relevant topics
  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to develop internal and external communication strategies to publicize the company’s sustainability effort and promote broad awareness of initiatives
  • Provide guidance on the company responses to questions or statements of position on sustainability matters including potential policy positions
  • Measure and monitor progress against key strategies, objectives, and performance targets


What We’re Looking For:

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience developing sustainability programs and initiatives for large corporations, preferably within consumer products, retail or fashion industry

  • Strong network within sustainability, environmental and other related communities required
  • Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to work closely with internal business units
