The Newton Food Pantry is the oldest and largest pantry serving the Newton community. An independent, non-profit organization, founded in 1983, the Newton Food Pantry aims to alleviate food insecurity in Newton by providing supplemental food and personal care products to community members in need, serving our clients with dignity, compassion and respect. The Newton Food Pantry currently serves more than 1,800 Newton residents through bi-monthly choice shopping and deliveries. The diversity of the Newton community is reflected in the makeup of our clients, more than half of whom speak a language other than English at home and/or identify as BIPOC or biracial/multicultural.

Position Overview:

The Engagement Manager serves as the primary point of contact for new and existing volunteers and clients, recruiting and managing volunteers and facilitating pantry access for all clients.The Engagement Manager serves as a pivotal representative of the Newton Food Pantry in the community, actively recruiting volunteers and serving as an advocate for clients, in addition to developing and implementing processes and plans that support and/or expand the operation of the pantry in accordance with client and volunteer needs. The Newton Food Pantry is led by a working volunteer Board and depends upon the commitment of volunteers to accomplish its mission. The Engagement Manager will join the recently hired Pantry Manager as the organization’s first paid employees.

Responsibilities Include:

Volunteer Management: responsible for recruitment, training, management, and recognition of volunteers. Specific responsibilities include:

Recruit a diverse team of volunteers, including BIPOC and bilingual individuals, to ensure vibrant volunteer support for the pantry

Orient and train new volunteers and develop ongoing training programs and procedures

Monitor and manage weekly volunteer sign ups/schedules, perform outreach to fill volunteer openings as needed

Process volunteer forms, enter volunteer data, and report on volunteer activity

Collaborate with pantry leaders to assess the on-going need for additional volunteer roles and ensure that adequate volunteer participation is available to fulfill the pantry’s operations and mission

Design and implement volunteer engagement, appreciation, and recognition initiatives

Solicit volunteer feedback and implement suggestions and improvements to ensure a positive volunteer experience

Other tasks may include, but are not limited to: overseeing interns, organizing/supporting food drives, and participating in volunteer shifts as needed

Client Support: responsible for ensuring that all clients can easily access the pantry and other programs, as well as executing client outreach. Specific responsibilities include:

Respond to inquiries by new and existing clients

Work with local contacts, including: social workers in Newton Health and Human Services department, Newton Housing Authority, Newton Public Schools, etc,. to support and/or obtain new client referrals and coordinate services

Onboard new clients, ensuring they understand how to access the pantry and pantry procedures

Develop and manage client processes and policies, including managing the client appointment schedule and sign up process

Communicate with clients to address issues and provide updates regarding policy changes

Collaborate with pantry leaders to design or adapt processes and procedures to best serve client needs

Enter client data and report on client activity

Coordinate transition of clients to delivery programs as needed

Other tasks may include, but are not limited to: participating in the weekly client distribution process, managing outreach activities to expand client base

Resource for the Board of Directors: serves as resource for the Board related to client and volunteer issues. Specific responsibilities include:

Recommend operational improvements to best meet client and volunteer needs

Compile information as needed for weekly Board memos, marketing and fundraising efforts, and other reports and presentations

Collaborate with Board to set operational and strategic goals and review achievement of objectives

Participate in monthly Board meetings

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Car and valid driver’s license
  • Ability to deliver exceptional customer service that is responsive to the needs and interests of clients and volunteers
  • Ability to serve as an external ambassador of the Newton Food Pantry demonstrating skills representative of the Pantry such as empathy, compassion, collaboration and professionalism
  • Exceptional communication (written and verbal), administrative, and organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask, solve problems, work independently, and take initiative in a fast-paced, unstructured environment
  • Prior leadership, management, and team building experience
  • Ability to work in a diverse community that fosters an inclusive environment
  • Forward-thinking with a collaborative work style
  • Strong computer skills, including Google applications, willingness to learn other systems/databases, including reporting
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be fully vaccinated, including all available boosters

Compensation and Benefits: up to$60,000-$65,000 annual salary (based on experience), plus stipend for health insurance, paid vacation
