Visiting Faculty Digital Initiatives Librarian

Position Summary
Eunice and James L. West library is a collaborative team that works closely with other library departments and campus faculty. The Digital Initiatives Librarian will coordinate the vision, planning, implementation, and maintenance of the library’s digital programs, including digital collections, digitization, digital preservation, digital scholarship as well as Open Educational Resources implementation and support on campus. This position will also coordinate and support the development, maintenance, and management of the repositories needed to deliver the library’s digital platform. This librarian will perform outreach and instruction to the campus community regarding the library’s digital initiatives and programs, oversee the TXWES Maker Lab, and serve as library liaison to faculty. The library’s digital repository is housed on the Quartex digital platform and Special Collection resources use Archives Space.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain the Library’s digital collections and scholarship repository
  • Manage digital collections: establishing, implementing/updating, interpreting, and enforcing policies and procedures and setting departmental digitization and electronic collection priorities in fulfillment of West Library goals
  • Create digital exhibits highlighting the Library’s special collections and campus initiatives
  • Create and manage workflow documentation related to Digitization projects
  • Follow best practices to digitize the University’s archival collections and assist with coordinating the Library’s digital initiatives for global use
  • Develop and support the University Open Educational Resource (OER) Initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with other library departments
  • Engage with faculty and students to secure content, create new partnerships, and advise on fair use and copyright law. Participates in student training and orientations. Create an education program for subject liaisons to promote the digital repository to all campus units
  • Supervise and train staff members working in the TXWES Maker Lab to use and maintain equipment
  • Maintain equipment in the TXWES Maker Lab including regular cleaning and maintenance tasks, identifying and troubleshooting issues, and updating software
  • Commitment to professional development and engagement in scholarly activities and service to professional organizations
  • Serve on library and campus committees and fully participate as an active member of a highly collaborative, team-based organization
  • Weekly reference assistance for students either at the reference desk or online via the Ask a Librarian chat
  • Engage in the University’s institutional effectiveness process including annual planning and outcomes assessment, applying effective methods of evaluation and continuous improvement as related to the Library
  • Other duties as assigned

Education, Certifications and/or Licenses
  • Master’s Degree in Library and/or Information science from an American Library Association accredited program


Experience
  • At least 1-3 years experience with digital collections management.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
Preferred
  • 1-3 years of professional experience working with digital archives, digital repositories, and/or Special Collections
  • 1-3 years of project management experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digitization processes, life cycle management of digital assets, metadata schema, authority control, controlled vocabularies, and relevant descriptive standards
  • Demonstrated relevant experience with metadata work on digital projects
  • Experience supporting Open Educational Resources
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, management, supervisory, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion, and ability to engage effectively with a broad spectrum of culturally diverse groups.
  • Experience with grant-writing and/or managing grant-funded projects
  • 1 year of experience working with 3d printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutter and/or other maker lab equipment

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and knowledgeably, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Knowledge of digital preservation standards and practices, including standards for the certification of Trustworthy Digital Repositories
  • Knowledge of nationally-accepted digital metadata standards such as Dublin Core or MODS; archival description standards such as DACS or EAD
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with various computer file types
  • Ability to work independently and effectively, using tact and excellent judgment
  • Ability to ensure Libraries technologies are compliant with ADA requirements
  • Analytical skills for decision making
  • Ability to adhere to University and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to participate in a collaborative service-oriented environment
  • Ability to provide and demonstrate excellent customer service
  • Ability to plan, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks
  • Proven interpersonal skills to provide support in a high-profile office with tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to follow TXWES Maker Lab safety protocols
  • Ability to learn and apply new technology in the TXWES Maker Lab
