Victim Advocate Job at Gilpin County
Primary Responsibility: The Victim Advocate provides direct line victim services for all victims of crime. Coordinates and provides immediate contact with victims of crimes to offer individual and family support, information on the criminal justice system, support agency referral, aid in acquiring emergency shelter, financial assistance, emotional support and facilitation in other immediate needs. Provides assistance to and maintains relationships with a variety of law enforcement and court agencies.

Main Job Duties:
- Assist victims of crime with support throughout the criminal justice process and provides appropriate referrals. Be able to explain the criminal justice process in a clear and an easy-to-understand manner.
- Treat victims with fairness, respect and dignity. Provide service which is free from intimidation, harassment, or abuse throughout the criminal justice procedure.
- Respond on scene to a variety of environments, settings, and conditions to provide crisis intervention.
- Work closely with victims attending to requests and acting as a resource and liaison between victim and criminal justice personnel.
- Provide victims with information on what they may encounter during a criminal trial and other court proceedings. Inform victims of the status of their case including all significant proceedings and its final disposition.
- Develop a close working relationship with the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office and its victim witness programs; the Black Hawk Police Department and other law enforcement agencies and victim services units.
- Create and update client files. Maintain Victim Services Program records in a confidential and organized manner. Adhere to state statues related to confidentially and records retention.
- Ensure confidentiality is maintained under the Victim Service Program.
- Answer the telephone and receive inquiries, provide information based on extensive knowledge of victim programs and activities; refer callers to appropriate personnel or services, as necessary.
- Assist victims in understanding Crime Victim Compensation and completing and submitting the application and required documentation.
- Research, compile, and summarize a variety of informational and statistical data and materials; prepares clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written material.
- Review all police incident reports to determine if victim services intervention and involvement is needed. Contact victims of crime in Black Hawk, Central City and Gilpin County through personal contact or mailing of literature and information.
- Attend trainings, meetings, conferences, and/or seminars as necessary to remain current on best practices in the field of victim services.
- Provide assistance and support to individual when requesting Civil Protection Orders.
- Attend court hearings with/or on behalf of victims to provide support and advocacy.
- Comply with state and federal law and guidelines for victim advocacy services, notifies victims of their rights under state law and explain services of the department.
- Follow all statutes and guidelines of the Victim Rights legislation and Gilpin Victim Services program Protocol and Directives.
- Assist victims with the return of property being held as evidence.
- Notify victims when a defendant is released from jail - in compliance with state mandates.
- Arrange temporary emergency shelter for victims as necessary.
- Network with and participate in meetings with other victim advocacy programs to maintain connections and be able to provide appropriate referrals and assistance to victims.
- Handle stressful situations in a professional manner and accurately assesses situations and people.
- Assist Victim Advocate Coordinator with budget preparation, month end and quarter end stats, and audit of month end police reports.
- Operates the County automobile in the performance of assigned job functions; including but not limited to transporting clients.
Additional Job Duties:
- Makes oral presentations before businesses, civic, school, church and or other groups, as appropriate, on topics pertaining to criminal justice system and rights of victims.
- Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the Victim Advocate Coordinator and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency situation.
Specialized Job Duties: The following job duties are assigned to a specific Victim Advocate in Victim Services Division and each individual Advocate will be evaluated on the duties that they are assigned.
- Assist Victim Advocate Coordinator with developing and maintaining a training program
- Assist the volunteer program and maintains employee training records, meetings and hours worked for volunteers. Represents the Sheriff’s Office during recruiting assignments and obtains applications from qualified applicants for the volunteer program.
- Act as a liaison with the 1st Judicial DA’s Office Victim Witness program to ensure that all protocols are relayed to all Advocates and Volunteers to ensure uniformity in services. Could be assigned to other committees as a liaison / representative.
- Each Advocate will be assigned an agency (Black Hawk PD or Gilpin County SO) to ensure that all reports are pulled and all victims are contacted in accordance to the rules set by statute and protocol of the victim services office.
- Maintain a computerized database utilizing spreadsheet and word processing software to maintain statistics.

- Must be available for emergency on-call coverage, which may include nights, weekends and holidays.
