Vice President of Student Affairs

Job no: 8456
Work type: Full Time
Location: Providence, Rhode Island
Categories: Staff/Administration, Student Affairs, Calendar Year (12-Month)

Johnson & Wales University (JWU) was founded as a business school in 1914 in Providence, Rhode Island by Gertrude Johnson and Mary Wales. Over more than a century, JWU has evolved to a private, nonprofit, accredited, comprehensive university that prepares its graduates to make meaningful and immediate contributions in their fields of choice. JWU serves more than 8,600 graduate, undergraduate, and online students at its campuses in Providence, Rhode Island, and Charlotte, North Carolina, and has an impact that is global, with more than 120,000 alumni, from all 50 states and 125 countries, pursuing careers worldwide.

An innovative educational leader, JWU’s colleges offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs in arts and sciences, business, engineering, food innovation, hospitality, nutrition, and health and wellness. It also offers undergraduate programs in culinary arts, dietetics, and design. JWU’s unique model provides students with the personalized attention, academic expertise, and industry connections that inspire professional success and personal growth. The time students spend at JWU is nothing short of transformative, as demonstrated by career outcomes, expected earnings, and economic mobility rankings.

As a university founded by two women before they had even secured the right to vote, it is in JWU’s foundation to nurture and strengthen an inclusive and equitable environment. Several faculty and staff members make up the University’s Inclusion, Diversity & Equity Action Group to evaluate and strengthen these efforts so all members of the community feel supported. Faculty and staff work closely with different student alliances to create cohesion in the mission as one JWU that everyone feels heard, included, and represented.

The Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) will play a vital part in fostering the holistic development of JWU students. The VPSA will create a supportive, caring environment where faculty and staff work with students to help them succeed academically, personally and professionally. The VPSA will support a symbiotic connection between academic and student affairs to promote academic success, increase student retention, and enhance the overall student experience that embodies a positive and inclusive student culture. The successful candidate will serve as an engaged leader who will develop and implement a vision for student affairs that is aligned with the University strategy.

Reporting directly to the Providence Campus President, the Vice President of Student Affairs will provide leadership, as well as general guidance and direction for the administrative and programmatic areas within the division. The VPSA will provide leadership and oversight for the services and programs provided by Student Affairs, including accessibility services, academic success, counseling and health and wellness, residence life, athletics, and commuter and community relations. The Vice President for Student Affairs will manage a budget of over 7 million and a division of over 65 administrators and staff members and over 70 student employees. The successful candidate will oversee and direct the professional development, planning, assessment, evaluation, fiscal and budgetary management, program creation and implementation designed to provide holistic education and experience.
