Job Summary:
Provide assistance to the staff veterinarians with a variety of procedures, including surgery and ultrasound. Maintain overall patient care: feed, water, groom, bathe, exercise, administer medication orally
or topically, and clean and disinfect kennels.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty, as
listed below, satisfactorily.
Essential Duties:
- Regulates temperatures and humidity’s of patient kennels and nurseries.
- Cleans, and disinfects patient kennels and surgical equipment.
- Competently performs laboratory procedures, including manual differentials.
- Take proper radiographs of patients using correct technique, while ensuring personal safety.
- Collect and records pertinent patient information necessary for optimal care such as weight,
physical condition, treatments administered, medications given, and food intake.
- Observes and may examine patients to detect signs of illness, disease, or injury.
- Grooms patients: washes, brushes, clips, trims coats, cuts nails, and cleans ears, as
needed. Discusses with patient owners their pets’ grooming needs.
- Exercises, feeds, and waters patients according to appropriate schedules.
- Provides treatment and/or medication to sick or injured patients under the direct
supervision of the doctor(s).
- Prepares patients for check-out.
- Answers telephone, routes calls, provides information, and takes messages in accordance
with practice/hospital procedures.
- Properly enters treatments in the medical record system.
- Generate proposed treatment plans for clients and effectively go over them with the client.
- Responds to inquiries and provides information to patient owners for proper care of their
pets.
- Speaks coherently to clients regarding the status of their pet, while giving appropriate updates.
- Advises doctor(s) on patient’s health being held at the practice/hospital: food intake, urine
color, stool characteristics, vomiting, sneezing, coughing, or any symptoms or behaviors
that the patient is exhibiting.
- Ensures all supplies are well stocked.
- Escorts and assists owners to their cars, as needed.
- Assist in the training of new Veterinary Assistants.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues properly as trained.
- Assist in checking the work of Veterinary Assistants, and ensuring work is done correctly.
- Obtains and records patient case histories.
- Prepares patients, instruments, and equipment for surgery.
- Assists doctors with surgery when requested.
- Cleans and sterilizes operatory, instruments, and equipment.
- Maintains stock of supplies, medicines and other inventory.
- Supports doctors in a variety of tests and analyses.
- Takes patient’s temperature, pulse and respiration and records results.
- Removes sutures from patients, as needed.
- Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
- Collects specimens and conducts laboratory tests, such as urinalysis and blood work.
- Ensures patients are ready to return home as scheduled.
- Discusses and provides guidance on patient’s condition with the owner.
- Provides assistance to the reception staff when needed.
- Assists doctor(s) with birthing, spaying/neutering, dental procedures, physical exams,
surgical procedures, and euthanasia as required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of practice/hospital animal caretaker procedures.
- Skilled in the use of standard office equipment including: telephones, calculators, copiers,
fax, computers, and computer software (MS Excel, Word, Veterinary Practice Management
software).
- Attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Maintain confidence with the client regarding abilities of doctor(s) and staff.
- Works cooperatively with management, staff, and clients.
- Ability to prioritize and complete tasks independently.
- Ability to greet visitors professionally and courteously.
- Ability to accept constructive criticism.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and maintain confidentiality.

- Knowledge of surgical equipment (instrument identification) and the proper sterilization and wrapping technique.
- Knowledge and ability to use ALL equipment within the hospital following training.
Education / Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2 or 4 year degree from a veterinary technology school.
- Minimum of 2 year(s) relevant experience.
OR
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements/Certifications/
Licenses:
Veterinary Technician registration, certification, or license issued by the State Board of Veterinary Examiners or specific state equivalent.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- May be required to lift up to 40 lbs.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels.
- Bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling are frequently required when providing
customer service to patients and clients.
- Active movement throughout the day: walking, standing, squatting, etc. (not a sedentary
position).
- Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or
operate equipment.
- Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation.
