Summary/Objective
The blood banking/ ECC nurse coordinates with the Fetch emergency & specialty teams to ensure proper patient and client care. They work under the direct guidance and supervision of the Assistant Practice Manager and the Criticalist for the success of Fetch and its team members.
Essential Functions
Candidate must be detailed oriented and have the veterinary nurse skills as listed below:
- Manage the blood banking email and communications with clinicians, technicians, students and clients regarding blood donors
- Educate and train nurses on all aspects of the blood banking processes
- Schedule donor screening and follow up donation appointments
- Regularly communicate with prospective clients who may be able to provide blood donor pets
- Process blood products as needed to maintain sufficient inventory of all needed blood components
- Keep patient records up to date with donation notes and financial credits
- Communicate with clients, doctors and other services on the status of blood bank products
- When not processing blood products, provide nursing support for patients as needed in the ECC and specialty wards
- Experienced in proper animal restraint, anesthesia monitoring, catheter placement, phlebotomy and performing treatments
- Have a sound knowledge of emergency procedures and processes
- Have sound medical terminology knowledge and common disease processes and medical emergencies.Knowledge of ezyVet, SmartFlow and the Cubex systems are helpful

Work Environment
This job operates in a veterinary hospital setting. Normal vocation environment risks associated in this setting as related to the operation of industry specific equipment, treatment of and exposure to clientele, and health hazards related to disease and specialty care.
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
Physical Demands
This position will require at least 8 hours of walking/standing/crouching/bending, lifting/ pushing/pulling between 1-50lbs, and sedentary work.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Introductory period of 2 months (60 days). Evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required as job duties demand, as well as availability by phone and/or email for emergency-related questions, concerns, emergencies and staff inquiries. Must also be willing to occasionally work overtime.
Basic Requirements
1. Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology or other animal biology related field or high school diploma (or the equivalent) with minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in a fast-paced veterinary hospital with demonstrated leadership.
2. CVT or licensure eligible.
3. Strong technical skills and familiarity with endotracheal intubation, sedation and general anesthesia, critical thinking, and patient advocacy are a must.
4. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills in relating to co-workers, clinicians, students, staff, and clients. Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Preferred Education and Experience
1. Experience in a small animal practice.
2. Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent and a current CVT/RVT/LVT credential are strongly preferred.
3. VTS in ECC or Internal Medicine is preferred.
4. Prior experience with blood banking is preferred.
5. Excellent patient restraint, venipuncture skills, and knowledge of medicating, monitoring and treating cats and dogs is preferred.
